This is probably the most impressive athletic feat ever Averaging a 4 minute mile for 26 straight miles should not be possible

The fact that it was never achieved before, and in one race TWO people reached that milestone

Insane

@twtnotpost I said 12 years ago this is how it would happen. Almost got the right city, too. (Previous WR was in the city I predicted.)

@twtnotpost Actually incredibly impressive

He doesn’t look that tired.

I truly don’t understand how

It is a bit over 4:33 per mile. Still impressive. Shoes have come a long way when it comes to the Marathon. Not just shock absorbing but also have a trampoline effect.

Don’t forget to mention the guy in second was in his first career marathon

World's least impressive mathematical feat is to round 4.58 minutes per mile down to 4.🙄

Insane! And then he stops his watch timer like it was a normal 5k

Guy in second broke the world record and lost. Crazy

I think our boys high school record for the mile was 4:24 These guys keep that up for 26 miles It’s unreal

Someone has never heard of “Free soloing El Capitan”…

No, this is.

It’s insanely impressive but he averaged no where near 4 minutes per mile.

Different level. I’m trying to crack sub 23 minutes at my local Park Run, it’s pretty hilly 😂

A 4:34mi for 26.2mi. How? How can lung capacity and muscles be trained to this level. The human body is amazing.

I feel bad for the 2nd place guy. He breaks the old WR and breaks the mythical 2hr barrier on his debut marathon, but is 'just' the 2nd place guy.

@contrarian4data If you got passed by this guy on a 400m track, you would say he was sprinting. Every elite marathon needs a series of regular joggers out front. Not to pace the leader, but to demonstrate how absurdly fast they are running.

What about that total loser 11 seconds behind?

stupid impressive. but not alex honnold on el cap

Was this the race where he had 5 or so pace runners for wind resistance? So it wasn't an officially recorded feat, more so a milestone event? In no way is this a knock either, dudes the goat hands down. Just curious whether this is new and he has done it solo

No that was Kipchoge 2019

@its_ALTA No way that was 2019

@its_ALTA October 12th 2019

My best time ever was about 4 hours, 7 minutes and some odd seconds. I wanted to break four hours but never did. I ran three marathons trying, but failed. People that run 26 four minute miles aren’t normal humans. No normal human can train their way into that time.

Howabout the 2nd runner also coming in right around 2 hours. He should get more than honorable mention. Incredible.

It isn't possible. A 4 minute mile would be a 1h45min marathon. Not possible for current humans.

Amazing. Eliud Kipchoge was the shinning light to make this happen - so cool to be done in an official street race. Amazing athletes

@dowis_mark More accurately, it's 68 seconds, per lap, of a standard athletics track... ...422 TIMES! 🤯 For context: men's 800m world record pace is ~50s per lap... but they chuck it after two laps!

but can he do this?

it really is insane... like the mental strength needed for that? 😭 absolutely incredible

4:33 minute mile. A 4 minute mile would drop another 13 minutes off the time. Not being pedantic, but that is a big difference.

Not quite 4 minute miles, more like 4:34, but still insanely impressive.

Honnold free soloing El Cap is the greatest athletic achievement of all time

The question is... if the guys running 2:06 all those years ago were born a few years later, would they have been the ones running sub 2?... for me, once the mental barrier goes the times will come. Amazing to think what the next "impossible barrier" is.

For those who don't know, a 4 minute mile is damn near sprinting.

Test him for PEDs.

A marathon is 26.2 miles. If you finish in 2 hours (120 minutes): 120 ÷ 26.2 ≈ 4.58 minutes per mile That’s about 4 minutes 35 seconds per mile

4:34 is not close to 4:00.

Most impressive ENDURANCE athletic feat.

You must not have seen the man who unclipped all the bras in one minute.
