Nobody gets out of it alive. There is no point in studying the moves

I think the point isn't escaping the game, it's making each move count while you're still playing.

Please listen to this. The image he’s describing is the image you posted not the image shown in my video. The hands on the head, the “Devil” laughing, those aren’t in the image in my video. But they are in the image you posted. The king has one more move.

Yeah, I think the point isn't to dwell on death, but to make every moment of life count.

Life is the champion of a tournament it created for itself. It knows the secret moves you scrambled for. It is a dark knight that has never lost, a master magician that pulls tricks from its fingernails while smiling at you. You are just a big black fish in the pond of life.

The boy might not be playing against death but against his future corpse - compare the ears, elbows, shoulder blade, and elongated limbs. Also see how the figures complete a circle. In addition, look at the robe: the young boy is sitting with his lower body stretched forward and naked, with the robe tossed aside - he is fearless. The corpse, on the other hand, is wearing its robe and leaning forward with its upper body. The corpse’s robe is also red, which is to say that the future corpse bears the scars of fears close to it, or rather, the blood from those scars near it. The corpse presumably does it because it knows how valuable that blood is (especially now that it is dead) - the young man knows no red and does not seem to care about it. By the way, you can’t see any eyes here, just hands, as if to say that the young boy uses hands for eyes, but he only really touches himself, while the corpse uses his hands to touch the world. There are more interesting things here, but really the fun part about paintings is noticing the choices made by the painter and then dissecting why these were made- it quickly becomes similar to a movie because the questions about the choices lead the viewer in a continuous search in the image - and a continuous interaction with a 2D image is basically a movie.

That's a very fascinating analysis. Thank you for taking the time to share it. This is exactly the kind of thoughtful discussion that makes symbolic art so compelling. The fact that the painting can inspire such rich interpretations over a century says a lot about it.

Thanks for adding the context. Owe Zerge's Victoria Mortis (1921) is rich with symbolism, which makes it such a thought-provoking piece.

Chess history shows that famous painting titled 'Checkmate' actually carried a dark secret when the artist revealed the devil was playing for the man's soul. Deep artwork always tells a second story. Who remembers the real meaning behind that board?

Urban Tailor's profile picture
Urban Tailor2 months ago

That's one of the reasons these paintings remain so compelling, people are still uncovering new meanings and sharing different perspectives.

Before we were aware we are alive, there was no concept of time, no concept of death, no concept of what was or what could be. We existed as youth in the moment. Then as adults, all of these concepts and ideologies are forced upon you. Only GOD knows what is next. Not Death. 🫡

Christ has risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life. Contemplate what is being said here as well. The table of the money changers has been overturned

Things to say here are a lot..! First, only one out of the two seems worried about how the game is going... I look at that painting and I see life. From birth, you're at a losing game with death. Come with nothing, go with nothing (nakedness). And the hour glass with death signifies that death has time on its side so it's never worried or troubled.... Dark background takes away any form of distractions cause nothing else matters when you face-off with death 💀

Urban Tailor's profile picture

Your description is quite similar to the one in the video, you understand the painting quite good.

Isn't there a famous story about a chess grandmaster seeing this painting in the Louvre, and pointing out that the young man is not checkmated, he has another move. One critique could be that art imitates life. Even if the artist didn't intend it... there was hope all along

Urban Tailor's profile picture
Urban Tailor2 months ago

Another compelling observation. If the king truly has another move, it transforms the painting from one of inevitability to one of possibility.

Chris Knoernschild ✝️'s profile picture
Chris Knoernschild ✝️2 months ago

The painting is about Christ... death comes for all but for those who believe and hold fast, it has no hold. The King has one more move. It is true that the man is naked because it shows the futility of worldly goods and possessions
