🛩️ This is so cool: A Redditor living under SFO's takeoff path built a ceiling projection that maps every plane flying over their house in real time, using ADS-B, the open radio signal aircraft broadcast on 1090 MHz. Same feed as FlightRadar24, picked up with a cheap SDR dongle...

I initially thought he captured high def video and projected the video feed onto his bedroom ceiling. Great invention idea. The gutter looked like crown molding

I vibe coded something similar, not as good as this. I live in Malta so I made an app that tells me whenever a large heavy plane is flying over flight within 40 miles and even estimates where I should go to which balcony, front or back, and what direction to look to see the plane if I want Here is a screenshot of it working. An A380 is flying past! I'm going to my back balcony with FlightRadar24 and going to look at it

When a sentence starts with ‘A Redditor’ you know it’s going to be something nerdy and awesome.

Creative #DIY use of #ADS‑B and an #SDR dongle for real‑time flight tracking turning airport noise into an interactive ceiling projection. #Cybernorse

This would be cool for about 5 min max. After that, you’re just dealing with a weirdo needs to get out of his house more.

A $30 SDR dongle and an open radio signal turns into a real-time aviation map projected onto your ceiling - that's the kind of project that shows how accessible signals intelligence has become for personal use. The same setup people use for serious aircraft tracking and OSINT investigations can also just make your apartment look like a control tower. Are there other broadcast signals that would work for similar ambient projects, like ship AIS or satellite passes?

Not the same as flightradar24 unfortunately, flightradar incorporates satellite coverage allowing them to catch many more flights than ADS-B. That being said you can catch some flights that otherwise wouldn’t want to be detected using ADS-B rather than Flightradar24

This is what happens when curiosity meets a $30 SDR dongle and too many planes overhead, open source and genuinely useful!
