2036: “I wasn’t talking about your grocery receipt”

This is a very good illustration of what inflation does to the value of money over time. Increasing the money supply is politically popular, but the impact in the real world of economics and finance is disastrous.

pretty accurate except for 2006, people working in mcdonald’s were getting houses.

The Federal Reserve was unavailable for comment, despite being the sole cause of the 98% devaluation of the dollar since 1913.

By 2036 for $200k you can buy a used F-150 and live in a tent in its bed.

Odd. I bought a house on an acre in town in a major metroplex for 300k post Covid. Plenty of 200k homes in my subdivision. Built in 50s - 90s. Stop buying new houses. They're built like crap anyway.

Bought my first home in 2002 for 101,000. Second home in 2017 for 229,000. This is bullshit. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I mean me and my wife are looking at several within that range now. With land. Move out of the big cities.

This is what happens when you get off the gold standard and inflation picks up with government printing money

There’s a definite problem with wages to housing cost but the average house in 1986 was 1500sq ft. Not the mansions in here pics.

$200k in 1986 is 600k today. This should be titled, “I don’t understand inflation, but I keep voting for it”. Politicians openly promote policies that inflate home prices even more quickly than general inflation and the masses cheer.

True. Also your salary was $10k/year and the mortgage was 12%

That was true for me, so I went to another part of the country where the housing was 1/2 the cost. Lots of jobs and the people are nicer too. Best thing I ever did.

It’s not that accurate. And I am not downplaying the insane prices of everything right now, but I bought my house for $110k in 2016. Which actually makes the current prices even more insane.

🙄. $200,000 in 1986 is equivalent to $610,000 in 2026.

Tom Groth's profile picture

Oh please stop complaining. That $200K in 1986 is $600K today and the average salary in 1986 was $17K/year while today it is $70K/year. Please put down the video games and start adulting.

Even though the reel was based on pounds, the AI answer: "$200,000 in 1986 had roughly the same purchasing power as about $609,400 in mid-2026 (June 2026 data); equivalently, $200,000 in 2026 is worth about $65,600–$65,640 in 1986."

Nvm the fact that wages were 20k and interest rates in 1970s were 13%

This is the rate it’s going, but it also depends on how high/low your maintenance is and what part of the country you’re going to live in.

It's not accurate except in a very narrow set of circumstances. 200K, sure. 200K Sure, 2 miles outside the city. 200K Sure, 5 miles outside the city. 200K Sure, 10 miles outside the city - that's not enough to buy a flat in the city - but outside the city it's 4 bedrooms.

Yeah, there were crashes in 1981, 87 NY/NJ, 91-94 S&L crisis. 2001-2006 bubble. If you bought late in those periods, you were screwed for a long time. "Price Declines: Real U.S. home prices slid roughly 13% to 14% peak-to-trough, taking until the mid-to-late 1990s to fully recover in real terms" Forbes "Sales Volume: New single-family home sales fell by 32% between 1986 and 1991, and existing home sales dropped 12% from 1988 levels. [1]" None of this is new. Your posting is just a premonition of what is headed this way.
