Tinubu governed Lagos in 1999-2007 and Lagos has seen many goveenors after that that did excellently well. If there is a problem call on the current governor to fix it..Tinubu built an economic powerhouse that has attracted millions of residents, nowhere else could pull such amount of people, cut him some slack and stay on topic.. overpopulation has its disadvantages and thats exactly what we should focus on tackling not everything is politics

See, two truths about waste management in Lagos are that Nigerians don't or cannot afford waste management services simply because their purchasing power has diminished. However, the government's failure is that it has not made the waste collection process effective. I also think banning the small abokis carrying waste in Lagos is a senseless move because, at the end of the day, the waste is just littered on the roads. What they could have done is try to see how these people could be registered and forced to take these bins to LAWMA collection centres, while LAWMA handles public markets with big bins.

I spoke directly with several PSP (Private Sector Participant) waste operators in Lagos to understand their core operational challenges. In Lagos, waste collection is mostly handled by private operators who pay a 15–30% (forgot the actual number) commission to LAWMA at the end of each billing cycle. During my interviews, almost all operators complained about payment collection specifically, tracking which households owe money and managing outstanding balances. But when the conversation shifted toward digital tools that could automate payment tracking and flag delinquent households, the response changed completely. Their hesitation revealed the real problem: manual payment systems allow operators to hide revenue, underreport collections, and underpay government fees. The issue isn't a lack of tools. It's that transparency isn't in their interest. The operators aren't struggling. They're profiting from the status quo and that's exactly why nothing changes, regardless of what funds get allocated or what the government promises. And the worse an area looks, the more leverage they have over the government, a visibly dirty Lagos is a bargaining chip, not a failure they're motivated to fix.

Thank you for a well articulated report. We have been calling them out for a long time, but of course we fully understand now that these APC people are frauds and will never do what is truly required to make people’s lives better, so Lagosians must kick them out come 2027!!! Enough is enough!!!
