I think from a design standpoint, the cone emphasizes the wrong info for people. I see it shared way more than, say, an image like this that shows potential impact. The cone on the other hand draws attention to the center line, which can be misleading.

Hurricane Ike in 2008 is a great example of this. Made landfall officially as a 2 but the storm surge was very impactful and destructive.

Absolutely, thank you for saying this. As powerful storms weaken, they grow in size and have a ton of built up kinetic energy. That energy has to go somewhere. We saw it with Katrina, we saw it with Ike: once-intense but weakening hurricanes that delivered catastrophic surges.
