Most Japanese are genuinely nice people. My barber in northern California for 30 years was a Japanese expat. His English was pretty bad, but we had a lot of good laughs over the years. I was sorry to see him retire. The level of service was off the hook.

I did a couple of years teaching English in Japan in the 90s, pre internet era, if you were young and wanted life experiences, you just got out there and did stuff. Feel a bit sorry for youth of today, stuck on their phones.

I feel like so many foreigners get this great experience in Japan because of how many lonely and reserved Japanese people are starved for an honest conversation. They know due to societal pressures they can't be candid or themselves around other Japanese people.

I had a similar experience once. In Mexico, a Polish expat (our dinner host) called me over to ask what it was like to be a fireman. Had a nice chat. On the way home, my friends said that was probably the first time he had spoken English in 20 years

That entire encounter was so pleasant so nice! I hope that engery never changes in Japan. I love all the twist and turns and even that he turned on the music and spoke english, and enjoyed doing so.
