Matt Reeves explains: "I wanted that moment where he says “I'm Vengeance” and Rob comes out and you see him as this Batman for the first time, I wanted it to be like that moment, a shocking moment, in Goodfellas when Henry Hill…the neighbour has assaulted Karen who he's dating, and he gets so angry you see him drive up across the street from the neighbour. He gets out of the car, they look at him coming, and he takes out his revolver, and he beats this guy senselessly. It's shocking, and at that moment you realize the depth of his rage, and just how dangerous he can be.
