This is assault. A person doesn't have a right to put their hands on another person unless in self defense. It is the police's job, not some vigilante.

While I am not making a legal judgment about this incident, there are LOTS of circumstances where a person is allowed to put their hands on another person. But let's take this situation and add in some hypothetical facts: What if the driver had his wife in the backseat of his car. She was pregnant and bleeding from a knife wound. He was taking her to the hospital but couldn't get there because of the protester. Would he be justified to remove the protester?
