I worked in power generation a trade I learned in USN starting in 1982. That white guy is portraying the backbone of the energy industry. A guy like that would be pulling $45-50 hour and with OT well over $120K a year 2 years after a 2 year technical degree.

Back when I was in high school, we used to jokingly call this the “Pom-Pom Theory” or the “Cheerleader Theory.” You had people who were book smart enough, popular, pampered, and told they were destined for big things. Then graduation came. Some people went to college and picked degrees that actually led somewhere. Others went into the trades, learned on the job, and started making real money right away. Then five or six years later, you’d run into some of those same people at the local bar. The ones who wouldn’t give you the time of day in school suddenly wanted to talk because they found out you were working, earning, and building something. Meanwhile, they had gone to college, taken on debt, and ended up with a degree that didn’t translate into a decent job. That’s the problem. We sold generations of kids the idea that simply going to college was the achievement, instead of asking whether the degree had real value in the job market. A diploma by itself doesn’t pay the bills. A useful skill does.

Some people aren't content to do a job that does not challenge them intellectually. It's a privilege to work a job like that-the young lady is working hard to not have to climb utility poles for her life.
