Almost everything people “know” about the Bible and homosexuality rests on two mistranslated words and a date most have never heard. 🧵 2/ The word “homosexual” is younger than the telephone. It was invented in 1868 by Karl-Maria Kertbeny, who coined it while arguing AGAINST an anti-sodomy law, not for one. 3/ It’s a hybrid word: Greek “homo” (same) bolted onto Latin “sexualis.” A modern medical term. It did not exist in any language before the 1800s. 4/ So how is it in the Bible? Someone put it there. “Homosexual” first appeared in an English Bible in 1946, in the Revised Standard Version, at 1 Corinthians 6:9. Never before that, because the concept didn’t exist to translate. 5/ It replaced two Greek words: malakoi and arsenokoitai. Neither plainly means “homosexual.” 6/ Malakoi means “soft ones.” It’s the same word Jesus uses for fine clothing in Matthew 11:8. Across Greek it means weak, cowardly, self-indulgent, undisciplined. Calling it “homosexual” is a choice, not a translation. 7/ Arsenokoitai is rarer. It appears nowhere in Greek before Paul, who seems to have built it himself from the Greek text of Leviticus. A word that rare can’t be defined by usage, because there is none. Its meaning is guessed, not known. 8/ And after Paul it shows up next to economic crimes: theft, kidnapping, slave-trading. Not sexual sins. Many scholars read it as condemning exploitation, the powerful using the powerless. Slaves. Boys. Prostitutes. 9/ That fits the real ancient world, which had no concept of “orientation.” Sex was ranked by power, not gender. Active vs passive, penetrator vs penetrated. The idea of a person defined by who they love is modern. 10/ Which is exactly why a new word had to be invented in 1868. You cannot read a 19th-century category back into a 1st-century text and call it “what the Bible says.” 11/ Now look at the verse it leans on, Leviticus 18:22. It sits in the same code that bans shellfish, mixed fabrics, planting two crops in one field, and trimming your beard. Christians dropped every one of those. 12/ So why keep one line and bin the rest of the chapter, then call the line you kept “timeless” and the ones you dropped “ceremonial”? That isn’t reading the text. That’s choosing the answer first. 13/ The whole arc of the New Testament bends toward including the shut-out. Eunuchs, foreigners, the unclean, the outsider. Toward forgiveness, not away from it. One group left as the lone exception should make you stop. 14/ Step back to the root. A God who is love, who made every person, does not build a whole group one way, innately, from birth, unchosen, then command them to spend their life hiding it. That is not a Creator. That is a warden. 15/ Scripture says we are made in God’s image. If that’s true, the gay person in front of you is also made in that image. Not a defect, not an error to correct, but part of what God made and called good. 16/ And the tradition’s escape hatch fails. They say “the Fall corrupted it.” But the Fall was a choice. It corrupted what people DO, not how they’re MADE. Orientation isn’t chosen, and even the Catholic Church concedes that. So it belongs to creation. 17/ A God of love does not hand one group the freedom to love openly and deny it to another, then call that justice. Anyone who says He does is describing an owner, not the God of love they claim to preach. 18/ Psychology has also documented a pattern, stated carefully: those most violently hostile to homosexuality are, in some cases, wrestling with the very thing they condemn. Not a rule, but observed often. Bottom line: this all rests on a human reading of two contested words. No translator heard it from God’s mouth. I don’t claim to know what they mean, and neither do they. The difference is I’m not willing to condemn people over a guess. wouldn't true Christianity and loving my neighbour be accepting someone until God said otherwise.
