Bread pudding, bread and butter pudding and summer pudding are all deserts made from stale bread (although we make them more posh with brioche these days). People have always done this, including bakers and patisseries.

Mix the slate bread with milk, eggs, butter and sugar? Me granny used to do that... and all the other people that lived through the scarce after the war. No food went to the bin, even when things improved.

Dear "gringos": It's a Brazilian dessert. The sugar in the syrup doesn't mix with the rest of the ingredients. It just forms SYRUP. And if you want, you can add vanilla. É uma sobremesa brasileira. O açúcar da calda não se mistura com o resto dos ingredientes. Forma apenas CALDA. E se quiserem, podem sim acrescentar baunilha.
