If you aren't doing so already, I would suggest investigating the right combination of microphone and protective earphones. Possibly even 2 microphones and an appropriate mixing device so you can hear both direct sources (your interlocutor) as well as ambient sounds in a manner which is properly controlled and attenuated. Those who target people and seek to damage their sense apparatus, such as vision and hearing, need to be charged.
