This is what happens when galaxies collide; a billion year gravitational waltz. This supercomputer simulation includes images from Hubble of actual galactic collisions at different stages. 📽: NASA, ESA, and F. Summers

Source of the visualization: A collection of images from the Hubble Space Telescope of galaxies colliding:

The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way, the two largest galaxies in the Local Group, are expected to collide in about 4-5 billion years, creating a giant elliptical galaxy. The stars are so far apart that they will not collide, but some may be ejected from the system.

The gravitational complexities within a galaxy, and more so in colliding galaxies, are still mysteries to modern physics. Our understanding of physics is applicable only within the confines of our own galaxy.

I spotted a few heart-shaped galactic collisions

Was this event captured by a telescope or was it a mathematical model?

I agree with waltz. It looks like a beautiful dance between two galaxies. 😍

Of course 💫
