From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Ferry Farhan TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. The last photo is that single frame. Absolutely incredible.

Stars and the Firmament💫 The water above the firmament consists of liquid oxygen, while the firmament itself is made of frozen, pure oxygen. Oxygen freezes at -218.79 degrees Celsius. As is well known, pure oxygen is blue when frozen. The higher you go, the colder and denser it becomes. This is also how the familiar wave effect is created when rockets launch into the sky. p/s These videos have gained me followers. They were filmed with a Nikon P1000 – the most powerful zoom camera on the market with 125x optical zoom!😉 And they write: Stars are not what we are led to believe. There is no space above the firmament of our planned and immobile Earth! I once told someone a long time ago that stars in videos look like light shining on the bottom of a public swimming pool. This ball had just a 55% catch probability, and is just made to look so easy by Ceddanne Rafaela. It's all about what you don't see on the screen, because it happens before the camera is on the play. The jump is 9.0 feet above average. He was positioned well into right-center. Lesser outfielders win catch on the week on this one with a full extension dive.

Beyond the clouds is a fascinating world. What you see here is a picture of a red sprite over a thunder cloud that I took as part of the Thor-Davis experiment from DTU Space ⚡Red sprites are part of the rare phenomena known as Transient Luminous Events, often shortened TLEs, that can appear over thunder clouds. The red sprites form around 40 to 80 km above ground and as you can see in the video from the Davis camera, the red sprites appear after the thunder has struck and much higher up. The Davis camera is special in that it does not take a picture like a regular camera, but like the retina in our eyes that is sensitive to changes in light, allowing it to take up to the equivalent of 100.000 pictures per second. This brings back memories of the blue jet I caught on camera on my first mission in 2015. / En verden over skyerne Det her er et billede af en rød fe over en tordensky, som jeg tog som en del af Thor-Davis-eksperimentet fra DTU. Røde feer er en del af de sjældne fænomener kendt som Transiente Luminous Events, ofte forkortet TLE'er, der dannes over tordenskyer. This is how they grab prey above the water which is why you don’t want to overhang the water on croc territory. We can protect crocodiles best by teaching people how to safely live alongside them. We sure do love our crocodiles!

Something to note here for Vancouver's Rainfall in July 2026. This is simply what a normal July actually is for us over here weather wise. It's just been 10 years since we have last seen a normal July for Rainfall. July 2026 has had nothing extreme, nothing abnormal. Just that this is what statistically a normal Vancouver July is weather wise for Rainfall. The only ENSO phase that is consistent with us having wetter than average Rainfall in July seems to be Super El Nino's, or either coming off or heading into one like in 2026. 1982: Well above average Rainfall in July 1997: Well above average Rainfall in July 2016: Slightly above average Rainfall in July 2026: Slightly above average Rainfall in July You want to blame something, blame El Nino for our good fortune in Vancouver this July. #bcstorm #shareyourweather
