This is what we’ve normalized in San Francisco. Someone can be passed out, drooling and incoherent, with their legs hanging into the street—and cars just drive past while people walk by without a second thought. At what point did seeing another human being like this become so normal that... show more

You frame it as a lack of empathy. But the reason we're in this mess is too much/misplaced empathy.

I can agree with you on that. Allowing people body autonomy and to do whatever they please has created this city’s current state no doubt. We have also gotten so used to seeing this that we don’t even look in that direction either.

I hate to say this, but everything you did here was for you. You left this man in the same state you found him, but you got a video of it for Twitter.

Thank you for caring. The activists those who made the money all but disappeared. An inhumane humanitarian disaster.

Being a good Samaritan can be legally dangerous. Sadly we are better off just moving on and ignoring it.

Addicts/Junkies passed out on our city streets. We see them every day, even in decent neighborhoods. It's become normalized in San Francisco. No one stops because it's hopeless. @DanielLurie

LEGALIZE taking care of CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS! They have outlawed Opioids prescribed by their MD’s! They are killing us and we need them to stop normalizing this behavior! It’s not a Opioid Crisis it’s an Illicit Fentanyl Crisis!

Good point. I'd say somewhere around decriminalization and preventing cops from doing anything. After a while people just throw their hands up and say "what's the point?"

You must be new here. Same guy throwing cans of urine at the cars 20 mins earlier…. Everyone’s glad he finally passed out Than some libtard comes, wakes him up, then leaves him for us to deal with.. If someone wants to off themselves & the city is okay w it.. fine by me

He dances with a sign begging for money. I highly doubt he was throwing cans of urine. You are a terrible person. Definitely not new here.

Yeah that’s what you librards always say but you never stick around to deal with the consequences you create..

Thank you for checking on him, truly. I also check on people that most just walk or drive by. It’s incomprehensible to just ignore another human in danger. Society has demonized the unhoused, those with addiction & mental health struggles- so much that the average citizen simply pretends not to notice in order to “stay safe”. Imagine if each of us actually stopped to help a fellow person one time a day? How much healing that would allow. Instead most just rely on “professionals” to do the hard work. It’s simply an excuse. Most of us are all one injury/accident/sickness/stressful event away from also being homeless and thrown away by society.

That’s so true. Literally it could happen to anyone. Especially these days. I could never just walk past someone because it would weigh very heavily on me. I often go home at night thinking about something sad I saw during the day, it’s usually animals suffering on the streets that gets me the most. Just because they don’t choose to suffer but are forced into those sad situations. But I always check on people. I’ve saved someone from an overdose on my lunch break. I couldn’t imagine just walking by and ignoring someone that may be dying or dead. It happens far too often in this city and everywhere these days really. Sad.

Girl you’re an angel. This world is very hard to walk through for some of us 🥰

He hasn’t been ok since he decided to go ahead and take those drugs.

Had incident recently where someone on fent lean stopped in street, blocked traffic. Had to wait a moment to decide ethical burden & whether person needed help. Sure enough as soon as I called 911 they snapped out of it. After light had changed 4x. Too many to check every time

@darren_stallcup I remember before London Breed and now it’s getting worse under Lurie. The Supervisor of this district Bilal Mahmood is a complete phony, he only does PR red ribbon cutting ceremonies and attends fancy parties where he hobnobs with special interest groups.

@darren_stallcup Because when you help them they usually curse you out

"are you okay?" Famous last words

Legs hanging into the street and nobody stops - that's not compassion fatigue, that's us giving up on each other. We can do better than this.

You know what also changed? That instead of just helping this dude someone's walking to him with a fucking camera in the hand, recording everything and putting it online, without even blurring his face...

It's like you're asking people to jeopardize their lives and careers for them. Those people are dangerous at worst and liabilities and burdens at best

That’s a sad way to view people. I’ve never had someone return my assistance or help with violence. Never. It can happen but when they are in this state.. it’s very unlikely.

We stopped when the started stabbing people for bothering them

Sadly, that’s likely the meth bend.

Why help keep them alive if they are actively trying to kill themselves

it’s not limited to SF. most people are not going to take it upon themselves to intervene with someone like this.

Sorry about all of the sick heartless people who responded. Most people do help and 911 calls are answered quickly.

Yes, It's terrible what San Francisco has become. It's depressing and dangerous. That's why my family and I have stopped going to SF. So sad.

White liberal women pieces of shit like you are what's wrong with this country. He made his choice. Leave him alone. That's what all you fucking West Coast liberals want right? Ya'll okay helping the druggie in the street, but will vote the Libtards that allow this right in.

Looks like a good way to get surprise stabbed.

If you stop to help anyone, make sure you pull your phone out, hit record, and post it online for some reason

They banned legit chronic pain patients from getting the medicine we need to survive & have a quality of life! They want us injured/disabled patients dead by going to the streets to get pain relief they planned this, DEA, CDC. Get Government out of our Healthcare System!

When democrats created it in masse.

Bitch he’s ODing he’s not OK

He stood up and started flying his sign as he usually does. He didn’t want me to call 911 and got up. Calling the only person who stopped to make sure he was okay a bitch..

You can still have empathy and understand that person's experience without acting on it. Carelessly acting on empathy and bothering a stranger isn't always a good idea.

He had his legs in the road!

He can still pepper spray you and sue you for battery. Best just let him get run over. The car will be fine.

What your describing is progressive compassion for those with substance issues. We mustn’t bother them. In fact we must continue to give them the tools so they don’t have to face the hardship of ending their relationship with these substances.

Make what this person is going through easier rather than getting over it. Let people be as they are and look the other way. When I was on the streets, I can’t think of one thing I was given or offered that made me be like, wow thank you, you are truly making my life better, it was more so, thank you for this meal or tent.. now I don’t need to go buy food or spend my own money on shelter.

And casually walk by strung out mental cases in the process of dying on the way to a great screening at the Roxie Theater…how they make the city authentic and gritty! So bohemian!

Yes it's tragic, but what exactly can one do? Give them money to spend on more drugs, take them home , become their relative and start supporting them. etc.?The normalized part is that there's so much suffering and the govt resources are nowhere to be found.

I checked on a man in Nevada City and he'd been dead at least 12 hours. But he wasn't on the or near the road.

If the person doesn't care about themselves then why should anyone else? Not to mention the fact that you greatly increase your risk of physical danger by simply interacting with them or allowing them to take notice of you.

Very normal in San Francisco
