Thank you for checking on him, truly. I also check on people that most just walk or drive by. It’s incomprehensible to just ignore another human in danger. Society has demonized the unhoused, those with addiction & mental health struggles- so much that the average citizen simply pretends not to notice in order to “stay safe”. Imagine if each of us actually stopped to help a fellow person one time a day? How much healing that would allow. Instead most just rely on “professionals” to do the hard work. It’s simply an excuse. Most of us are all one injury/accident/sickness/stressful event away from also being homeless and thrown away by society.

That’s so true. Literally it could happen to anyone. Especially these days. I could never just walk past someone because it would weigh very heavily on me. I often go home at night thinking about something sad I saw during the day, it’s usually animals suffering on the streets that gets me the most. Just because they don’t choose to suffer but are forced into those sad situations. But I always check on people. I’ve saved someone from an overdose on my lunch break. I couldn’t imagine just walking by and ignoring someone that may be dying or dead. It happens far too often in this city and everywhere these days really. Sad.

Had incident recently where someone on fent lean stopped in street, blocked traffic. Had to wait a moment to decide ethical burden & whether person needed help. Sure enough as soon as I called 911 they snapped out of it. After light had changed 4x. Too many to check every time

What your describing is progressive compassion for those with substance issues. We mustn’t bother them. In fact we must continue to give them the tools so they don’t have to face the hardship of ending their relationship with these substances.

Make what this person is going through easier rather than getting over it. Let people be as they are and look the other way. When I was on the streets, I can’t think of one thing I was given or offered that made me be like, wow thank you, you are truly making my life better, it was more so, thank you for this meal or tent.. now I don’t need to go buy food or spend my own money on shelter.
