This reminds me of an article I read years ago that mentioned how rampant political violence was in the 60s, quite poignant.

My Dad was NC Central then. He marched, was arrested, spat on, and called names. He was an art major. I have hanging on my wall a painting he did in 1863. I look at that painting to remind me what my Dad went thru:

The government was big on shut the fuck up…..if you won’t shut up then you got shot up. Masterful work by the CIA/FBI to ensure the plug got pulled on rival beliefs and ideals. They neutralized many people that spoke out for change.

99% of White didn't have slaves. The Civil War didn't start over slavery. You talk like you just found out there WAS slavery.

I actually learned about this both at home and in school. My parents had me reading Watsons Go to Birmingham in Elementary school and I had really great Social Studies teachers in HS and one of my teachers in college at LSU really dealved deep into the Summer of 1963.

I don’t think you can say it was the most important year in all of US history. For equal rights and ending segregation yes. I’d give the year 1776 as the most important year, followed by 1787, 1865, 1941, 2001 and then maybe 1963.
