Sucks that some of that is staged, but itโ€™s the nature of the beast as only the CNO (Casualty Notification Officer), chaplain and CAC (Casualty Assistance Center) are aware of the NOK (Next of Kin) notification. Also, there is no way a CNO or Chaplain would show up in ACUs / OCPs as depicted in the video. Granted only those that have either performed the duty or been notified would know the nuances of NOK notification, especially if there are divorced parents spread out over the country, etc that require timed notification and multiple CNOs/CAOs. A CAO (Casualty Assistance Officer) can be in the duty uniform if the family/PNOK (primary next of kin) permits it as they assist the NOK with financial support and funeral arrangements, etc. But certain events still require the Army (or appropriate branch) service/dress uniform, like the funeral of the fallen service member to pay respects while honoring tradition. Iโ€™ve done both CNO and CAO and it was the most honorable but also one the most difficult things I ever did in the military.

I had the privilege to be on the Honor Guard in the Marines to help carry and fold the flag at these funerals but I absolutely hated treading anywhere near the gravesites of the fallen. I always thought it was disrespectful to walk over their final resting place.
