My first phone, a galaxy four I think, had a menu selection something along the lines of, “show Phone activity“, or something of that sort. When you selected that, the screen would change into a period of pieces, each one of them showing some phone activity. I’m not saying this quite correctly but, it was clear that the phone was always actively sending messages to and from the phone system, AT&T in this case.
