This John Bew interview is essential viewing. He understands how power really works. A historian of grand strategy and realpolitik, and a former adviser to four successive UK prime ministers. No one understands the current world order better than him. Pay very close attention. Bew warns that we’re at... a "break glass moment" on a whole range of domestic issues, including energy. His warning to Westminster is very simple: if Britain wants to hold our own in a harder world, we must urgently rebuild the foundations of our hard power. In this new world order, productive force will prove to be decisive. As I have argued before, that means restoring Britain's domestic energy base, ditching Net Zero, rebuilding industrial capacity, and securing our supply chains. We are, he says, the last man left at the Davos bar. In my own view, we should have left it long ago. 2014 was when the illusion began to crack. 2022 was the final wake up call. Remaining at the bar in 2026 is unforgivable. The lights are off. The staff have gone home. The music has stopped. Canada's Mark Carney is right. Keir Starmer and Ed Davey must take note. “The multilateral institutions on which the middle powers have relied … the WTO, the UN, the COP, the very architecture of collective problem solving are under threat. As a result, many countries … must develop greater strategic autonomy in energy, food, critical minerals, in finance and supply chains.” His Davos speech is a warning to Britain and Europe: the assumptions of the post Cold War order are no more, and interdependence is being turned into leverage by great powers. That has profound consequences for Net Zero. As he puts it: “But let’s be clear eyed about where this leads. A world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable.” Yes, Carney has just struck a deal at the weekend with China that includes easing tariffs on Chinese EVs. But the point of his Davos speech is not “more Net Zero”. It is that the era of naïve multilateralism is over. And since taking office, he has also moved to expand domestic oil and gas. That is significant, not least given his previous high profile role in shaping the Net Zero consensus in Britain. But his Davos speech is the language of national sovereignty, energy security and industrial capacity. You cannot rebuild hard power while deindustrialising and driving up the cost of power. And you cannot defend the values you claim to hold - human rights, free trade and the rule of law - without the strength to protect them. Net Zero as a governing doctrine is starting to unravel.

Our mainstream culture is conflict-avoidant. There is the assumption that the less conflict there is in a relationship, the better it is. I disagree. If there is real intimacy, conflict is actually unavoidable. Because we are all different. The real indicator of health in a relationship isn’t the lack of conflict, it is the quality of our repair. It is the level of authenticity we can bring. That requires knowing how to be with conflict and disagreement, how to hold nuance. And it also requires practicing the art of repairing. Are we willing to show up and repair what we broke? Do we have the skills and capacity required for that? Avoiding conflict means avoiding truth and therefore avoiding real intimacy. This work is essential and transcends the personal. If we aren't capable of dealing with conflict in our own personal lives, it is no wonder that the world is in the state it is, where the most prevalent conflict management strategy is escalation.

Matt Damon participated in Howard Zinn's great "The People Speak" series, and read out a great speech by Zinn about the importance of civil disobedience, which is as apt today as when he first wrote it in 1970: "I start from the supposition that the world is topsy-turvy, that things are all wrong, that the wrong people are in jail, and the wrong people are out of jail. That the wrong people are in power, and the wrong people are out of power. I start from the supposition that all we have to do is think about the state of the world today, and realize that things are all upside down. If you don't think, if you listen to TV, read scholarly things, you actually begin to think that things are not so bad. Or that just little things are wrong. But you have to get a little detached, and then come back and look at the world, and you are horrified. So we have to start from that supposition—that things are really topsy-turvy. And our topic is topsy-turvy: civil disobedience. As soon as you say the topic is civil disobedience, you are saying our problem is civil disobedience. That is not our problem…. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is the numbers of people all over the world who have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience. And our problem is that scene in All Quiet on the Western Front where the schoolboys march off dutifully in a line to war. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world, in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running the country. That’s our problem."
