This just baffles me. How do they synchronize?!? 🤯🤯 Is it some quantum mechanics thing, or a simpler explanation?

I’ve tried this experiment, many times, the trick is the moving platform. They will not sync up on a solid surface. It’s a beautiful cacophony though!

Yeah, it’s pretty rad if ask me. I don’t think I could tolerate metronome’s not being synced up for long unless there were a bunch. 😂

the board moving gives momentum to the metronomes going in that direction and takes away momentum from the ones going opposite until they're all going in unison

It is the Second Law of Thermodynamics in action. Things move towards their lowest energy state. The more the board moves, more it adds or removes energy from the metronome arms based on how they are sync'd to the heavy board. To achieve it's lowest energy state, the board must move the furthest, which requires the movement of each arm to be in sync. If an arm tries to go out of sync, the board's motion will slightly reduce and force it back into sync. Cliff Notes: It's magic.

Sometimes, understanding is overrated, and it's better to just watch the magic happen. :) In case this isn't one of those times, though, this is the math that 'explains' it. 😏

not quantum, they are sharing/cohering resonance through the platform they are on because it can roll on the cans. there's effectively a weak, but mechanical link between them through the board. over time, the in-phase state (swinging together) wins because it's the lowest-energy, most stable configuration. the out-of-phase states get "damped" by the board's motion until everything eventually locks together.

Now there is a solid explanation!!! Thanks! 🫡🏆

It has to be vibrations through the board and cans transferring to eventually get them all aligned on the same vibration pattern

It's called coupled oscillator synchronization. Even though each metronome is a separate "oscillator", they all share a moveable platform. The independent oscillators end up influencing each other through weak mechanical interactions passed through the shared platform and eventually fall into the same rhythm. Our physics teacher in high school showed us this demonstration. It is still just as cool every time I see it.

oscillator dynamics: metronome swings subtly rock the movable platform, transferring energy between them until they lock in step.

it's the rolling base. put them on a solid surface and they won't sync.

They are coupled oscillators the board rocks slightly on the cans, transferring energy until they all lock in phase classic physics demo have you tried it yourself on a wobbly surface?

It's conservation of momentum. The synchronization comes from energy transfer from the movement of the block they're sitting on as it moves back and forth on the cans.

Rolling on the cans is what does it.

JoshFL profil fotoğrafı
JoshFL5 ay önce

Mythbusters did this one. It’s literally the inertia of the wagging wands that wiggle the base on the rollers, which causes the remaining wands to adjust to the pace of the wiggle of the base. It’s a feedback loop. It only works if the base is sufficiently friction free enough to generate a resonance. And it only scales up to a certain point.

@end3of6days9 I would suspect that if you remove the pop cans and clamp the base plate to the table, they would not synchronize irreplaceable the table with a solid immovable surface.

This effect was first noticed with pendulum clocks on a wall. They would sync because the wall carried vibrations. Too solid a wall, no sync. Some mathematician finally tackled the problem and made formulas. This is from memory so happy searching. I'm having a couple nightcaps.

Simpler yes, the trick is you need them all connected to a single object that is able to move slightly. Once that object (the white board in this case) starts rocking back and forth it slowly forces everything to rock at its pase.

They 'leak' a little movement onto the platform - note how it can roll over the cans - which makes it very slightly harder to move against the aggregate motion and very slightly easier to move with it. Over time, that synchronises the pendulums.

The metronomes when out of sink are robbing each other's energy and the diffrance effects the resistance by the spring were movement is lost by the pendulum and transfered into the moving platform. All want the least resistance possible. So they give a little and git a little with the residual errors being absorbed by the platform. This allows the pendulums to catch up to the rhythm which is similar to the human body always striving towards homeostasis.

Folding_Napkins profil fotoğrafı
Folding_Napkins5 ay önce

Just my guess: With each swing the momentum of the other pendulums is shifted, so they pull their timing towards each other by increments. The key is the shared platform which lets them influence each other - otherwise they'd just swing in their own time and occasionally coincide. This is pretty much a perfect example of a Kuramoto oscillator system.

Carlo Ferlauto profil fotoğrafı
Carlo Ferlauto5 ay önce

It’s a pretty straightforward issue about net unbalanced forces at each metronome. The more out of synch each metronome is, the more force it encounters as a net individual calculation. If the arm is swinging to the right, and the base is moving to the right, there is a resultant force fighting the swing. In plain terms, the arm swings at a set rate, with the force of the “driver” creating movement. If you accelerate the individual metronome by the base going from left to right, you’ll be either fighting the momentum of the arm or easing it. That small force slows or increases the speed (frequency) of the arms slightly. Eventually that slowing or speeding brings all arms into perfectly parallel movements. Note: in theory, there is one perfect combination that would remain in chaos and never synchronize, but those positions are so razor thin that it is impractical to achieve.

Look at the base. It moves. That impacts the whole pendulum effect. If the base was unmovable, likely they would not synchronise.....
