I think I read that there was a show called samurai kid that had in like the 70s them but Naruto definitely popularized them

This is our introduction to advanced jutsu and it's honestly way better for the world building imo. Summoning a magic water dragon SHOULD be a big deal in a show about ninjas and hand to hand combat.

My head cannon is that they slowed it down for us.

They showed all that signs so Sharingan's use could be understood and seen for first time, actually they weave signs very fast

It was just sort of a deeper introduction to hand signs, like most animes the author always start things slow for the viewers to catch up, in later arcs they do such jutsu in like half a second

This is what I liked, before the power creep and godlike beings. Now they summon a meteor capable of leveling a city with 0 hand signs and call it a jutsu. A JUTSU?? Now this is a Jutsu

The introduction of the Water Dragon Jutsu has the single most amount of hand seals of any jutsu at FORTY-FOUR, but if you are skilled enough you can bring any jutsu down to just 1 seal and Sasuke shows that you can even bring it down to 0 seals.

The mizukage, kisame and other specific characters can do it in 3 or less hand seals, and at the time, for the power scale, a water dragon was A THING, so yeah, in retrospective it's not that good but at the beginning that shi was broken

They actually bust out those hand seals really fast, its probably like 10+ a second. That is the head cannon i have when i rewatch the older episodes and see them doing them slowly. Kind of like watching DBZ and most people cant even see the fights because they are so fast
