Yes and the F/A 18 does two jobs. Fighter - air to air and Attack - air to ground. In WWII the air to air fighters used a P for Pursuit P38 P51 P47. They changed the designation to F after the war.

Also an E is used for electronic surveillance an aerial radar plane E3 and E2. S is used for a sub hunter S3

...and, if we hang an E in front of that letter nomenclature - as in an EC-130V, then that E out in front stands for Electronic and the V in the back is the next letter C-130 variant (note we do skip the letters I and O as they look like the numbers 1 and 0 so as to avoid confusion as you can see and this is why there was no C-130I or C-130O...just confuses everyone. At the Skunkworks at Carswell, the 2762LSS/Det2, we did a lot of airplanes with E in the front. Hope that helps this kid and others like him.
