Healey resigned as Defence Secretary earlier this year supposedly because Starmer refused to fund defence sufficiently but now, as Chancellor, he will not commit the funds he previously said were necessary! Labour haven’t improved under Burnham. The state of our military capability simply isn’t acceptable.

The problem our treacherous governments have is that, if they get the war they want, they will have to arm the public. They may quickly find out they haven't convinced us fully who the preferred enemy is..

A splendid announcement. Now account for the money and the military capability it will actually buy. Your June funding table left £4.7 billion of the additional package to be funded at the Budget. Where will it come from, and which commitments depend upon it? Your published plan reaches 2.7% of GDP and stays there through 2029/30. Where is the funded route to the 3.5% commitment? Meanwhile, that same plan includes early frigate retirements and the withdrawal of Army Wildcat helicopters from 2027. Explain what replaces those capabilities, when it becomes operational and how you will prevent gaps in the meantime. More defence spending is welcome. Ministers remain personally accountable for procurement, delivery dates, trained personnel and equipment that is ready when needed. Publish the milestones. Report the missed deadlines. Explain the overruns. Take responsibility when promises fail. The taxpayer’s contribution is compulsory. The applause must be earned.
