Safety Tip: never sew over your pins! It's expensive and dangerous. What Could Go Wrong? If you don't remove the pins as you go along, the sewing machine needle will eventually hit one of them. Why that's bad: 1. The sudden stop damages the interior of your machine (it has hundreds of tiny parts in there). If you're really unlucky, one such collision can destroy the machine. 2. When the machine unexpectedly goes awry like that, it can grab the fabric and suck it underneath the plate. Extracting the project from the jam is difficult, and you often end up damaging both the fabric and the machine. 3. Broken pin segments fly everywhere - including the inside of your machine, where the tiny fragments can get stuck in the gears or worse. 4. Those same pieces can fly at you, even getting stuck in your eye! (Similar to what happens when a saw throws wood fragments.)
