He is the Mad King’s bastard. Makes the irony of his and Jon’s conversation in Book 1 all the greater. Jon reflects on being a bastard while Tyrion replies that all dwarfs are bastards in their fathers’ eyes. In truth, Tyrion WAS a bastard Targaryen, while Jon was true born Targaryen.

The filmmakers were teasing a theory that Tyrion was actually a Targaryen and thus able to naturally tame a dragon. It was a total waste though because they abandoned the narrative in the end.

No it isn't. In the books there is plenty of speculation that Tyrion is tge son of tge Mad King and Johanna Lannister, (Targaryen babies are known sometimes to arrive and the mother doesn't survive the birth) & that is the real reason Tywin despises Tyrion not his dwarfism.

Actually, not true. These books knew dragons to be extremely wise and just as smart as humans in some regards. They would have known that they were being set free and they would have spared him for that reason. His being a little person also could have played a part.

He has Targaryen blood due to his mother Joanna Lannister’s affair with King Aerys II (the Mad King) which explains Tywin’s hate for Tyrion. (Unconfirmed but popular fan theory)

I remember yesterday a friend mentioned me there was a theory about Tyrion being the son of the Mad King, since he was interested a lot of Twyin's wife (another reason to despise Tyrion). Due to that, he had partially targaryen blood and the dragons didn't harm him, cool theory!
