A Korean Man Conned His Partner and Coworkers Out of $700,000, Then Fled to Thailand In just two months, a 31-year-old South Korean man scammed 56 people out of 962.8 million won, roughly $700,000, across 71 separate transfers. It began with the people closest to him. Police say he told his partner and a coworker he needed money to clear investment debts and fund a wedding, and they sent him 65 million won. A second coworker handed over 50 million more after he claimed to be the victim of a rental-deposit scam, money he said he would repay once an insurance payout came through. Then he left the country and hid out in Thailand. He was wanted at home for fraud, with an Interpol red notice out for his arrest. CIB traced him through information from the South Korean embassy and arrested him this week in Bangkok. He confessed, and now faces charges in Thailand before he is sent back to Seoul.
