Reminds me of Sugar 🐿️. She liked her lower jaw rubbed like that too. I think any animal, raised, given resources and affection could possibly adopt the people rehabilitating it. It’s not always the case, but for a while after they are released, they will still trust and return for the affection. After a time in the wild, survival kicks back in and they do not trust as much. Get close but not touch. The time period in which they return is pretty special. Because it’s them choosing to return for that affection.

The man would leave out food, and slowly, the squirrel became comfortable around him. Before long, it seemed to decide that this backyard was home. It happily accepted the food, sometimes carrying extra pieces away to save for later. With plenty to eat and a safe place to stay, the little squirrel grew healthier and noticeably chubbier. Then one day, while taking food from the man, it looked up at him for a moment. That’s when he realized something sweet… maybe this squirrel had been saying thank you all along, in its own little way.
