Los Angeles County has used taxpayer funds to purchase the medical debt of 134,820 LA County residents and forgiven it Los Angeles County Supervisor “Starting next week, 134,820 LA county residents will receive one of these in the mail with no strings attached. Inside is a letter telling them that Los Angeles county has eliminated their medical debt completely gone. This is going to be a huge relief to thousands of families. No one should be pushed into poverty just because they got sick or needed medical care. And yet that's exactly what's been happening. This kind of debt often gets bundled and sold to debt collectors for pennies on the dollar who then go after families aggressively for the payment. But we asked ourselves, what if instead of collection agencies buying that debt, Los Angeles county bought that and what if instead of collecting it, we forgave it? American has a health insurance plan with UnitedHealthcare His wife needed surgery to remove her gallbladder - Surgery cost was $15,000 - Overnight stay was $12,000 - Insurance paid $900, he must pay the rest His son needed an ear surgery, the cost of the surgery was going to be $11,000 with insurance. The cash price for the surgery was $6,000 “The cash price is like half of what it is if you run it through insurance” So he tried to not use his insurance and pay the cash price, this is what happened “I was going to do for my wife's surgery. I was gonna say, we're just not even using insurance. We'll just cancel it. And I'll just pay the self-pay price. Turns out you can't do that because the hospital will sue you if they find out you have health insurance because they make more money if they charge your health insurance.” This is a scam He says he’s not paying the bill because it’s a scam, “We're wanting to try to soon, try to save up money for that so we can have another kid. This is just sad. California spends 8 to 10 times more on services for illegal immigrants than it does on veterans services from the General Fund. And now the legislature is trying to mislead the people of California with another Trojan horse ballot title by calling this Measure “Veteran and Affordable Housing Bond.” I voted no today because veterans should be prioritized in our budget. We should not have to pull a bond out during a record revenue year and a record budget. When the state spends over $10 billion on illegal immigrant services, including lawyer fees and medical healthcare, but only about $500 million on our veterans, we have a problem. Is it too hard to ask that we make sure every single veteran is off the street before providing services to individuals from other countries? Is it too much to ask that our veterans who fought for this country are provided more services and resources than individuals from other countries? Never let the state tell you we do not have enough money. What they really mean is that they just do not have enough money for you. Share, repost, vote, and save California.
