Gandalf vs. Witch-king of Angmar. But slightly more LOTR book accurate. According to the Return of the King book, Gandalf and the Witch-king meet at the gate of Minas Tirith and exchange a brief challenge, but they never actually fight. In particular, the scene where the Witch-king breaks Gandalf’s staff is entirely a film invention. The Witch-king neither possesses that kind of power nor the authority to do such a thing in Tolkien’s books. However, it is worth remembering that during the Siege of Gondor, the Witch-king had been specially empowered by Sauron. This is likely one of the main reasons he was bold enough to challenge Gandalf in the first place.

The original design of the Witch-king from the Lord of The Rings, with footage of him fighting Éowyn. The original design for the Witch-king of Angmar was very different and, in Jackson’s opinion, too similar to how Sauron appeared in the first film. To avoid confusion, his appearance was altered to make him more Nazgul-like, and mace was also made much larger.

Éowyn defeated the Witch-king not solely because she was a woman, but due to other circumstances that the films did not explore in depth: Centuries before the War of the Ring, the Elf-lord Glorfindel prophesied that the Witch-king of Angmar would not fall “by the hand of man.” Many interpreted this as meaning he was invincible. It was never a spell, only a prophecy. At the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Merry’s stroke proved decisive. His blade was one of the ancient weapons of Westernesse, forged during the wars against Angmar and enchanted against the Witch-king. When Merry struck, the blade shattered the sorcery that bound the Nazgûl’s form together. With that power broken, Éowyn was able to deliver the fatal blow, fulfilling the prophecy as it had long been foretold, that the Witch-king would fall at the hands of one who was no man.

The standoff between Gandalf the White and the Witch-king of Angmar in Rankin/Bass's 1980 The Return of the King animated film is actually the most faithful adaptation of their confrontation in The Lord of the Rings book. Unlike Peter Jackson's version, the Witch-king does not shatter Gandalf's staff. Instead, the two stand face to face at the gates of Minas Tirith in a tense moment that closely follows Tolkien's original text. Their confrontation is interrupted by the arrival of the Rohirrim, just as it is in the book, before any battle between them can begin.
