It's amazing how Kripke described Homelander during that season as a scared guy with guts, because despite everything, he went head-to-head with Soldier Boy in a one-on-one fight and didn't run away until he was 100% cornered and knew he was going to lose.

We saw he had the power to take away powers so he was right to be scared

This was before they even knew he had that kind of power

Maybe, he still had a reputation though, as far as he knew nobody was a match for him until now
