It makes it more sad for me because Repli-Mamoru was controlled by a Chemical Bolt (according to preFINAL.) He sacrificed himself to give Mamoru time to escape the Planetary Masters but at the cost of being put under their control and forced to fight against his friends.

i love this ova, but the trigger Gai angry just a bit over react, he decide to kill mamoru (which he didnt know at that time it was fake) to a repairable mech (choryujin). it would be dramatic if choryujin was completely destroyed, we can see choryujin in latter episode thou..
