It’s fine to set standards however you want. That’s not the issue. What’s false is Hegseth’s continued narrative that combat standards were somehow lowered for women. They were not. And for the SecDef to lie about that is a slap in the face to all women who have served in combat roles. Thanks to @TheWeekendMSNBC for having me on this morning.

This debate about whether standards are lowered for women is absolutely asinine. It is an incontrovertible fact that women are held to a lower physical standard than men in the military, police, and fire department. If they were held to the same standard, there wouldn’t be any women in any of these jobs.

Thousands of women have served in combat, with honor and distinction, and at levels that Pete Hegseth himself has not reached. Having personally served for twenty-four years, in combat for three separate tours, I take great offense at his indefensible position. It’s shameful to suggest that women can not do jobs that we’ve already done. #womenincombat

The Marine Corps conducted a nine-month study to assess the feasibility of women serving in infantry roles. Upon completion, the study concluded that integrating women into infantry units was a "lethal mistake", as it significantly compromised combat readiness. Despite this, President Obama and his Secretary of the Navy chose to ignore the findings, dismissing the overwhelming evidence of its negative impact. Women cannot physically match men in hand-to-hand combat and claims that "many men can't do the job either" are not a valid justification. This argument sets a dangerously low standard for what is required. Regardless of training, women will not achieve the same muscle mass or lung capacity as men, and their lack of testosterone makes them more vulnerable to injuries. Advocates for placing women in combat roles are effectively setting them up for higher injury rates and even death, leading to shorter military careers and long term disability.
