Only an exceptionally small and fragile man could feel threatened by a simple ritual of respect.

Hey Steve, how's your picture of Hitler going? Did you worship it this morning before you went off to say "Lest we Forget"?

This is incorrect. The 'right of passage' through another Aboriginal tribe's territory is a 'tanderrum'. The 'Welcome to Country Ceremony' was invented in 1976. We know it's a modern invention because, unlike 'tanderrum', there are no words or phrases in any of the 200+ language and dialects for 'Welcome to Country'. The Maoris have their ancient word, 'Haka', for welcomes/wardances. There is no ancient word for 'Welcome to Country'. If there are no traditional words for it, it didn't exist. For example, prior to colonisation, how did one say: "Who's performing the Welcome to Ceremony?" if there were no Aboriginal words for it? Simple logic defeats the notion that it's an ancient ceremony.

Our elites have nobody to blame but themselves for the reception these ceremonies are getting. If you tell people their ancestors founded an illegitimate nation, you are sending them the message they don’t belong. Any welcome in such circumstances comes across as insincere.

Hey Steve, the people have had enough of the division. There's no place for a 'welcome to country' ceremony at the ANZAC dawn service. It would have been the last thing on our fallen veterans' minds at Gallipoli; they died for their country, all of us. The political and media class do need to get a grip; it is they who have created this division.

So you won’t acknowledge that Aboriginal people were here first, served alongside everyone else, and deserve to be seen. That’s what you are saying when opposing the Welcome To Country at solemn events. There is a time and place for a WTC and the dawn service is absolutely one.

There's a lot going on in that jumble sale in your head cooker, and it's all bargain basement, chipped and stained. Time to educate you, and let you cook at the same time. “National demoralisation program”? Mate, you’ve built a conspiracy out of a microphone and a greeting. This isn’t analysis. It’s a full-blown narrative stitched together from vibes, fear, and a wildly confident misunderstanding of what a Welcome to Country actually is. Let’s pull it apart. ▓ What Welcome to Country actually is (and isn’t) The whole “this is a war permission ritual” claim? That’s the centrepiece of the argument - and it’s doing a lot of heavy lifting. Yes, historically, different groups had protocols for entering each other’s land. Like… most human societies ever. That doesn’t magically translate into: 𖧀 “You are here by permission and we could wage war on you.” That’s not how modern Welcome to Country functions. It’s a ceremonial acknowledgment of custodianship and respect, not a territorial threat dressed up in polite language. Turning it into some kind of psychological warfare program is like saying a handshake is a dominance ritual because medieval knights used to size each other up. ▓ The conspiracy leap Here’s where it goes off the rails: Ceremony at public events ↓ “Demoralisation program” ↓ “Preparing youth for radical treaties” ↓ “Australia is illegitimate” That’s not a logical chain. That’s a staircase where half the steps are missing and the rest are labelled “just trust me.” There’s zero evidence that a short ceremonial acknowledgment at events is conditioning an entire generation to reject the country. That’s projection, not proof. ▓ ANZAC Day “used to unite everyone” This one always sounds nice until you scratch it. ANZAC Day has never been some perfectly unified, politics-free bubble. Different groups have always experienced it differently - including Indigenous Australians who served and came home to inequality. Including them now isn’t “breaking unity.” It’s expanding who gets recognised within it. ▓ The sleight of hand This argument relies on a few tricks: →Redefining a cultural practice into something threatening (“It’s actually a war signal!”) →Inflating a brief ceremony into a national psychological operation (“It’s conditioning the youth!”) →Recasting inclusion as attack (“You’re being told you don’t belong!”) →Then offering the ‘solution’ Remove the inclusion, tension disappears. That’s not analysis. That’s framing. ▓ The reality A Welcome to Country at ANZAC Day isn’t telling veterans or families they’re trespassers. It’s acknowledging that the country those soldiers fought for has a deeper history that includes people who were here long before the nation-state existed. That’s not “delegitimising Australia.” That’s acknowledging the full story of it. We suspect you've never served or fought unless it was with a comb that refused to go near your head. PS: Water some of those plants, make yourself useful for a change.

You call yourself a historian and you can’t figure out why Aboriginal people welcoming us to country at Anzac Day makes perfect sense when they died for it before Australia even considered them human. Embarrassing.

I'll bet the house you haven't served this country. My father & father-in-law did at great personal cost, as did indigenous Australians. Just stfu on this day. It's disgusting that people like you wind up fellow non-serving numpties to the point of booing #Anzacday ceremonies.

The far right dishonoured the solemnity of ANZAC day. Booing at a dawn service is disgraceful. They booed a person whose family has served Australia over generations. The selfishness of booing has ruined our ANZAC day. Knock yourselves out trolling me. I’m done with dishonour.

You're going to hate this Stephen, but what was wrong with every anzac day commemoration across Australia today is that imperialist war should never have been supported or allowed to happen. Australia's ruling elite are promoting war & anzac "traditions" so they can drive another generation of working class youth to die for their profits. Trump & his Oligarchs in the US are baying for the blood of all young working class men & women in their drive to enrich themselves by taking over the oil & natural resources of the world.
