An off-duty police officer working security at a department store was alerted to an active shoplifting incident. The officer confronted a female suspect near the exit doors as she attempted to leave with a large bag of unpurchased merchandise. When the officer tried to detain her, a struggle ensued. The suspect broke free, ran through the store aisles, and fled into the parking lot. The officer pursued the suspect to a parked white sedan. As he attempted to pull her from the driver’s seat to place her under arrest, the woman produced a can of pepper spray and sprayed the officer This allowed her to put the vehicle in reverse, navigate out of the space, and flee the scene.
