This one definitely qualifies for the often-cited "Kids today will never know"… The original release of Windows 95 famously came on 28 (!) floppy disks. Because the operating system required roughly 40 MB (nothing now, but pretty big back then) of space, and each standard 3.5" floppy disk only... held 1.44 MB of data, the massive set was Microsoft's way of supporting older computers that lacked CD-ROM drives, which were still quite expensive at the time. Installing Windows 95 required hours of manually swapping disks, and a single corrupted disk could ruin the entire process - the horror! Downloading and installing 40 MB today would take just a few seconds. Back then, it took half an afternoon (or longer if you hit that dreaded corrupted disk).show more

Back in the late 1980s, a friend gave me a single floppy disk as a birthday present. He told me it was something you could put games on and actually play, and I remember staring at it all day, wondering if something that magical could really be possible. I followed him to a computer academy, and that was the first time I had ever seen a computer in my life. As a reward for bringing me in, he even got a whole box of floppy disks. That was the moment I first stepped into a completely new world. And when I saw, just like in the video, games being copied onto a disk, inserted into a computer, and actually running… the shock I felt easily ranks in my top five moments of my life.

The highest selling PC game 30 years ago in 1996 was... Myst. Despite its original release three years prior in 1993, it still dominated the charts, finishing ahead of Warcraft II, Civilization II, and Duke Nukem 3D. Yep, you read that correctly. Let that sink in. Yes, it looks dated now, but in 1993 (and still in 1996) it was pretty awesome. It played a huge role in popularizing CD-ROM drives, which gradually replaced the trusty 3.5-inch floppy disk. Games that once required a dozen floppies could now fit on a single CD, letting developers pack in far more content, especially higher-quality graphics (not always higher-quality gameplay though).

Space Quest III (Sierra, 1989) is still one of the best adventure games ever made - and it remains my personal favorite. As always with Sierra titles, the game comes in a beautiful, high quality box, manual, both disk sizes (PC version) with 3.5" and 5.25" disks. It was also a massive leap forward from the previous 2 Space Quest games, both in terms of graphics and story/depth. Nothing but love for that era and that company - I wished they'd never sold to CUC back in the 90s.

The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

i'm really enjoying 14.2, but i did ~80 miles of highway driving today and there's still pretty serious issues changing lanes on the model s, especially at night it will either do the lane change half way, then wobble back and forth for 1-2 seconds and bail, or take an insane amount of time to attempt at all in this video you can see my blinker was on (reflecting off the ground in the rear) for nearly 40 seconds with plenty of opportunity to change lanes and when it did, it hesitated which you can see. i took over to complete the lane change here

Imagine a whole universe hidden within in a single floppy disk. Yep, that's correct, that's all that David Braben needed to create Frontier: Elite II in 1993. The game simulated around 200 billion stars. Nearly every star had its own system with planets and moons. Each of those systems could have up to 20 planets, and those planets had their own moon(s). By now you might want to get out a calculator to keep track. Oh, and those planets or moons weren't just eye-candy, you could visit all of them in any system, with realistic 1:1 scale orbits, gravity, and physics. All on ONE disk. The first Elite was pure magic. The second one was a masterpiece of such epic proportions, I still can't comprehend how one person can envision and then actually create all of it. Old school developers were definitely a different breed.

Without Virtual Texture tech you'd need to download that and wait for a few seconds for your browser to decode it before you could use it. I know it's easy to discard gaming from the 80s, 90s, and even the early 2000s as nothing more than nostalgia viewed through rose-tinted glasses. One aspect that often gets overlooked in that debate is actually based on facts, not just overly sentimental nostalgia. Having a computer and wanting to get the most out of it - and sometimes even just to get it working at all - required you to be far more invested, curious, and hands-on, so maybe that's why anyone who experienced that era feels a stronger connection to it. You had to read up on things, learn, and tinker with both software and hardware. If you had a PC in the 80s or 90s, it wasn't a "one and done" purchase. There was constant upgrading: swapping out a crappy sound card for a better one, replacing a small/slow hard drive, installing a CD-ROM drive, doubling your RAM from 1 MB to 2 MB… the list went on and on. It meant installing and updating drivers so everything actually worked. It meant understanding compatibility issues - all without the internet in the early days - so you relied on magazines, manuals, and friends who had "been there, done that." And that was just the hardware side. Then came the software: getting drivers, configs, and setups tuned perfectly so you could squeeze every last bit of performance out of the machine. Some games simply wouldn't run unless you freed up those final kilobytes of conventional memory. There was even a whole industry built around "managing your PC" with tools like Norton Commander and countless others. These days, there is... No more fiddling with AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files. No fine-tuning HIMEM.SYS. No IRQ conflicts with your sound card. No more boot disks. Juggling hard drive space? Forget it - drives now come in terabytes, not megabytes. Dealing with a 5.25" floppy, a 3.5" floppy, and a CD-ROM drive all crammed into one case? What a drag. Saving up for that shiny new VGA card to replace your old EGA? Not a thing anymore. And yet, if you ask older gamers who lived through the 80s and 90s, most of us actually enjoyed customizing and troubleshooting our machines. It was part of the experience - part of the joy and excitement. Sure, it involved plenty of trial and error and frustrating "OMFG, why isn't this working?!" moments… but when it finally worked, the reward was so much sweeter. Finally freeing up those last couple of kilobytes of your 640K base memory? Glorious. Replacing that pathetic PC speaker with a real sound card? Pure ecstasy. To all you old-school gamers out there, I hope you experienced it the same way. I always felt that the need to tinker endlessly made the whole experience more rewarding. You were more connected to your machine and understood it on a deeper level. These days, you just click a button and the game downloads and installs itself. I have a modern PC, of course. It's been over 20 years since I last had to do any real tinkering. That's convenient, sure… but the magic and curiosity is gone.

Technical details and the sheer amount of work (and incredible talent) that went into some 80s games completely eluded you as a kid. You simply loved the game and never thought twice about it. Now, being much older, I often find myself looking back at those classics and diving into the technical details: Who created it? How long did it take? Was it a solo project? And most mind-blowing of all: what was the actual size of the game? That last part especially makes my brain melt, and the older I get, the more it sinks in. What those early programmers achieved can only be described as pure genius (and I don’t use that word lightly). Hardware no longer feels like a limiting factor in modern gaming. We have endless megabytes of RAM, terabytes of storage space, and lightning-fast internet. Forty years ago, it was essentially the Stone Age by comparison. An average picture you save on your phone or PC has a size of around 400 kilobytes. It’s just a static image, it doesn’t do anything. Now divide that by ten and you drop to 40 kilobytes. That’s roughly the size of The Last Ninja, developed by System 3 and published almost four decades ago in 1987. It was a single 5.25" floppy disk. I still struggle to comprehend how programmers back then achieved what they did - the incredibly immersive worlds they created under such limitations. I was simply blown away by the graphics (that gorgeous isometric view on the C64, packed with amazing detail) and absolutely mesmerized by the kickass sound. What Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees conjured up musically is an iconic masterpiece that will forever be part of gaming history. And that’s not all! The game also gave you some degree of freedom. It wasn’t strictly linear. You could go back and forth, revisit locations if you missed an item, choose to fight or sneak past enemies, hunt for the right objects and levers to progress, and so on. All of that (and more) in just 40 kilobytes - less than 10% the size of a single static photo on your computer that has zero functionality. Oh, and the cherry on the cake? Often those games were created by people without formal education in the field, they were mostly self-taught. They also didn't have any software tools and libraries like today, they wrote pretty much everything from scratch, going beyond what was thought to be technically possible. As a kid you have no clue. As an adult I still don't have a clue how they did it. But I have a lot more appreciation and admiration for their work. And I am glad I experienced it then and can enjoy it even now.

Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius on the collapse of FCAS with France: That the end for FCAS came was no longer surprising. It had been pointing that way for quite some time. It came down above all to tensions — let me put it that way — between the two major industries. With the knowledge of today, we would not set up this project the way it was set up back then. That is a lesson we must draw from this. It was an ambitious, large European project that has now shattered against reality. We have to live with that. There is absolutely no reason to assume that the German-French relationship is strained because of this. This changes nothing about the relationship with France. There are a multitude of smaller and larger projects on our agenda. As for the new jet — we will see which paths we take. We have already been in talks with various actors for months. You can imagine that I will not publicly speculate here about which project it could be.

Lizzo said what I’ve been trying to say for a long time. Artists of today can’t be as famous as artists from the 90s and early to mid-20s, like Beyoncé, Whitney, Celine etc. Your album could sell 20k and a single chart at #90 and a larger percentage of the world would know it. Now you can sell 5 million in a week, and the number of people who will know it won’t be as many as it was then. A song could have 10 billion streams on Spotify and you would see people who have never heard it. The streaming era has totally fragmented the market that even the most famous and successful artists of today are still not as famous as even the least famous and successful ones from back then.

If you watched MTV, VH1 or Fuse in the 2000's you saw Justin Harder's work many, many times. This is his 2004 reel, and probably my single favorite design artifact of all time. He's pretty lowkey these days, but his work blew EVERYONE away back then and he was one of the most copied designers of the decade (myself included). IMO a lot of this stuff would still look fresh as hell if it came out today, and he definitely deserves his flowers for being such a huge part of that and era/aesthetic that so many people loved. AFAIK he's not on here, so I can't tag him.

One of the toughest games I played as a kid was Aztec Challenge on the Commodore 64 (1983). My friend had it, and we played it nonstop until the disk was basically worn out. His dad used to brag that you fight a Pharaoh at the very end. We believed him because we never got that far! Turns out there was no Pharaoh, it was just a fun story to impress us kids. Back then, I wasn't aware that most 80s games didn’t really "end." They just looped back to the start after the last level. But at the time we never reached the end, and I'd be surprised if more than 1% did. It was one of the first games I played, and it made me rage-quit a lot. The levels looked simple, but they were brutally hard. You needed crazy fast reflexes to survive. That horrible piranha death sound still gives me flashbacks!

Every single one has an element of latent demand. For example, Marketplace. It came from this observation that if you looked at Facebook groups at the time, 40% of the posts were buying and selling stuff. Facebook groups were not designed for commerce, but that's what people were using it for. It's kind of cool. Like, you design this product in a way that can be hacked. It can be abused by users a little bit, and then you look at the data, you see how they're abusing it, and then you build a product around it. I think Facebook dating was pretty similar. I think the observation was something like 60% of profile views were people of the opposite gender that were not friends with each other, kind of like creeping on each other. The principle in product is you can never get people to do something they do not yet do. Only if education could be this interactive ❤️‍🔥 I've had a looong wish to build something genuinely useful through vibe coding, and I finally did it. A 3D human anatomy application built with Three.js using GPT 5.6 Sol. It all started with a single design image that I created using GPT Image 2.0. I then used it to generate every 3D organ image, one by one. Next, I converted each of those images into 3D models using Tripo 🔜 gamescom (and no, they didn't sponsor this 😄). After that, I opened Codex, wrote a master prompt based on the design, and gave it the prompt, the design image, and all the 3D models. Codex built the first version beautifully, but there was one big problem. Every single 3D model was nearly 120-150 MB. That obviously wasn't practical for the web and was giving a performance of 16fps. After a few iterations, Codex optimized each model down to roughly 2–5.5 MB while preserving the visual quality, reducing the total asset size from ~900 MB to just 28.6 MB. And each model loads on demand. Along the way, Codex also generated those anatomical illustrations showing where each organ sits in the human body, and even created the interactive hotspot markers that explain different parts of every organ. It handled all of that. The process wasn't exactly one shot, but it also wasn't difficult. You just have to do it step by step. It genuinely felt like building something that could make learning anatomy much more engaging. The inspiration came from Dilum Sanjaya's 3D animal plant cell project. A while ago, I posted about games that looked great but had terrible gameplay/controls. The one that stuck with me was Dragon's Lair, but there were so many more mentioned in the comments that I had totally forgotten about. Today, I want to turn the question around - games that looked rather basic (or even poor) but had incredible gameplay. So, basically the polar opposite of Dragon's Lair. The choice for me was rather easy: M.U.L.E. (Ozark Softscape, 1983). Back then the graphics were ok but nothing to write home about. However, the reason why this game still has such a cult following and so many fans today - over 40 years later - is its gameplay. I never had more fun in a multi-player game. The land grabing, the auction system, supply and demand principles, and the many last second buy/sell antics have lost none of their charm. It's a game that aged beautifully because the concept and gameplay are as good today as they were back then. If you had to pick a game that ranks rather low in terms of presentation but fascinated you for its gameplay, which one would that be?
