This one was fun – back in 2015 I used NOAA data to visualize Earth's wind flow – at the macroscale it looks almost like an ocean, you can see wind 'waves' crashing against continents This was for the website of Attenboroughs Reef which is still online 11 years later

Do you know about which has been up for many years now (and is even an iOS app now)

@OssianLore This is where the link took me..

@OssianLore So curious! I suspect it's a mobile redirect that's now been claimed by entropy, thanks for letting me know

@OssianLore The other link you posted - for the demo - works, and it's beautiful!

@ToughSf Could you please explain why the wind is entrained to the continents and not entrained to horizontal bands of high obstacles rotating at up to 1000mph at the equator? It breaks my mind

@ToughSf This is just wind flow close to the ground (the NOAA data lets you select by atmospheric height, it's very cool!), as you get higher, as you say, the effect of continents disappears and you'll begin see the jet stream and other large atmospheric features

@ToughSf You can see this here, try changing "height from surface (Sfc) to 10 hPa, the stratosphere)

would be fun to add a 1000 mile long 20 mile high wall in th sim to see how it changes the wind

The ocean analogy holds. Atmospheric dynamics follow the same fluid mechanics principles at macro scale.

layers of atmosphere crashing into lands’ coastal climbs; coupled with six Jet Streams of Worldly wonder. …and a C effect at our midriff! 🌬️🌍🌬️🌏🌬️🌎 $WIND ☕️👍🏻

Incredible work! A somewhat related question: is there a similar model for... different planets? I'd like to take a look at the wind behaviour with different atmosphere density

Wow, how did you do that - and any resources you'd recommend to learn the necessary skills/technologies involved?

It's three.js and WebGL – this is a good one to learn the foundations I tend not to use courses or study; if you can fall in love (or at lease become obsessive) with figuring things out and making things then you'll start to feel like you can make anything with enough small steps and time

It's still up here, one of my first client projects ever over a decade ago! A little clunkier than I'd like but still interesting

It's not clunky at all. In fact it's nostalgic (especially the wind patterns). I remember playing with some old tectonic plates on a globe similar to this. Thank you.
