This one was fun – back in 2015 I used NOAA data to visualize Earth's wind flow – at the macroscale it looks almost like an ocean, you can see wind 'waves' crashing against continents This was for the website of Attenboroughs Reef which is still online 11 years later

@ToughSf Could you please explain why the wind is entrained to the continents and not entrained to horizontal bands of high obstacles rotating at up to 1000mph at the equator? It breaks my mind

@ToughSf This is just wind flow close to the ground (the NOAA data lets you select by atmospheric height, it's very cool!), as you get higher, as you say, the effect of continents disappears and you'll begin see the jet stream and other large atmospheric features

It's three.js and WebGL – this is a good one to learn the foundations I tend not to use courses or study; if you can fall in love (or at lease become obsessive) with figuring things out and making things then you'll start to feel like you can make anything with enough small steps and time

The 50 year storm that Bodhi was talking about 🌊 The first thing that came to my mind when I saw these waves was Point Break. Watching the ocean like this makes it easy to understand why that scene stuck with so many people. The water looks powerful, unpredictable and almost unreal. But seeing waves like these in real life also reminds me that the ocean deserves respect. What looks incredible from a safe distance can be extremely dangerous once you're in it. Some waves are meant to be ridden by experienced surfers in suitable conditions. Others are better admired from shore. Either way, this definitely looks like the kind of ocean Bodhi was talking about.

Poseidon was probably angry 😡 yesterday. We ran into the kind of weather you don’t forget. It had been a long time since I last saw the ocean in this mood. The wind had passed, but what it left behind was a restless, angry sea. The swell was roughly 2 to 4 meters high. The ship was rolling heavily, tilting about 20–25 degrees off vertical, you can see it in the video. If to hold on to something tightly 😂 The wind was blowing at Force 9 on the Beaufort scale, a full gale, loud, and relentless. It’s been a long while since I faced weather like this. You only meet seas like this around this season, and when you do. I kind of miss it. Kindly follow me if you like contents like this. And on YouTube, I’ve been more intriguing contents:

Hurricane Melissa was upgraded to 190 mph today, tied for the strongest Atlantic hurricane on record! NHC says: “Based on a blend of the satellite estimates, flight-level wind and dropsonde data, and the fact that the area of strongest winds was likely not sampled by reconnaissance aircraft, Melissa’s peak intensity is estimated to be 165 kt at 1200 UTC 28 October. The dropsonde that measured a mean wind of 188 kt in the lowest 150 m, recorded an instantaneous peak wind of 219 kt (representative of a wind gust) at an altitude of 906 mb, which is the strongest wind ever recorded by a dropsonde in a tropical cyclone”

I felt like that kind of helped me get back into the present as I got a little bit unfocused there. I know I was hitting the ball nicely, keeping it under the wind so I just did that for the last few holes. “It’s definitely a good challenge, you’ve got to hit those good tee shots and keep it under the wind. This technology has me curious. It's called Wind Sail Propulsion. It's still in the 1.0 stages IMO. It's kind of interesting though and could potential save on fuel costs to get things across the ocean. It harnesses wind energy to assist or, in some cases, serve as the primary means of propelling ships. Another technology is the Flettner rotor, which uses the Magnus effect—created by spinning vertical cylinders in a wind stream—to generate forward thrust. Unlike sails, the rotor is powered by its own motor, allowing it to generate propulsion even when wind direction is unfavorable. Do you see potential for this kind of technology? What kinds of potential problems could arise? 🤨
