I was shocked to find out today that the plaque honoring the officers who protected the U.S. Capitol, the Senators , the House members, and our staffs, on January 6, 2021 is sitting neglected in a back room. This plaque was ordered by a law we passed in 2022. The failure to display it as required in the 2022 law is an egregious insult to all those who defended the Capitol, all of those who were injured, defending the Capitol, and the five officers who died as a consequence of the attack on the Capitol. I'm working with my colleague from North Carolina, Thom Tillis, to introduce a bipartisan resolution to put this plaque up in the Senate wing of the Capitol until we can get full agreement from the House to display it as the 2022 law requires.

The plaque is complete and long overdue for display. But Speaker Johnson is leaving it in a dark closet rather than honor those who protected him on that day. That’s why Rep. This should be a bigger story. It took years of fighting just to get this plaque honoring the officers who defended the Capitol on January 6th up on the wall. And when it finally went up, Mike Johnson hid it in the basement. These brave officers were beaten, gassed, and attacked by a mob trying to overturn a free and fair election. They were promised a plaque that would honor them in a place the public could see. And after years of waiting, this is what they got: a plaque installed in the middle of the night in a location the public can’t even access.

Their heroism will never be forgotten. You can only look at the photo of the plaque, because the plaque has never been put up, as required by law, on the capitol of the United States. It's a little curious. We say it, their heroism will never be forgotten. And yet the plaque, as required by law, is not yet displayed in the capitol of the United States.

Today marks 5 years since the attack on our Capitol on January 6. There have been a lot of efforts to rewrite history, but I was there that day. The building that represents American democracy was attacked by a violent mob, incited by President Trump, with the goal of preventing the certification of the 2020 election. Five U.S. Capitol and DC Metropolitan police officers lost their lives as a result of January 6, by heart attack and by suicide. Today, I stopped by U.S. Capitol Police headquarters to thank them for their service five years ago. As I stood in their operations center, it was surreal and sobering: on the big screens behind them were TV stations replaying footage of the attack five years ago, side by side with a live coverage of a protest today on the National Mall, led by Proud Boys who had been found guilty of violence on January 6th, and pardoned this year by Trump. And on yet other screens, reports of how the White House was trying to claim that January 6th was "a hoax." Despite everything they face, the Capitol Police continue to protect lawmakers and our Capitol, including providing me with 24/7 security for the past month after a raft of new threats over the past few weeks. We owe the Capitol Police a debt of gratitude for what they sacrificed for democracy back in January 6, 2021, and for their loss of life. And we certainly owe it to them, on this anniversary, to tell the true story of what happened for the history books.
