This past week marked five years since the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. However, years of political back-and-forth over a plaque honoring the first responders who protected the building from a pro-Trump mob that day has delayed its installation. On Thursday, the Senate unanimously agreed to display...

I was shocked to find out today that the plaque honoring the officers who protected the U.S. Capitol, the Senators , the House members, and our staffs, on January 6, 2021 is sitting neglected in a back room. This plaque was ordered by a law we passed in 2022. The failure to display it as required in the 2022 law is an egregious insult to all those who defended the Capitol, all of those who were injured, defending the Capitol, and the five officers who died as a consequence of the attack on the Capitol. I'm working with my colleague from North Carolina, Thom Tillis, to introduce a bipartisan resolution to put this plaque up in the Senate wing of the Capitol until we can get full agreement from the House to display it as the 2022 law requires.

Before sunrise Saturday, workers quietly installed a plaque at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol honoring the officers who defended the building during the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. There was no ceremony or unveiling. More than five years after the attack, the plaque’s installation concludes a dispute over whether it met the requirements of a 2022 law, objections raised by Speaker Mike Johnson’s office that lawmakers resolved in January.

Congress passed a law to place a plaque in the Capitol honoring the officers who protected the transfer of power, Members of Congress and VP Pence on Jan 6. The plaque is complete and long overdue for display. But Speaker Johnson is leaving it in a dark closet rather than honor those who protected him on that day. That’s why Rep. Jamie Raskin and House Democrats are placing replicas outside their doors until the official plaque is displayed in the Capitol where it belongs.

This should be a bigger story. It took years of fighting just to get this plaque honoring the officers who defended the Capitol on January 6th up on the wall. And when it finally went up, Mike Johnson hid it in the basement. These brave officers were beaten, gassed, and attacked by a mob trying to overturn a free and fair election. They were promised a plaque that would honor them in a place the public could see. And after years of waiting, this is what they got: a plaque installed in the middle of the night in a location the public can’t even access.

During Police Week, House Democrats demand the plaque honoring the law enforcement officers who responded, protected our U.S. Capitol, and our democracy on January 6th be properly displayed. The law instructs us to, and House Republicans failed to comply.

Himes: I've got a little photograph of it here, the plaque reads, on behalf of a grateful congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021. Their heroism will never be forgotten. You can only look at the photo of the plaque, because the plaque has never been put up, as required by law, on the capitol of the United States. It's a little curious. We say it, their heroism will never be forgotten. And yet the plaque, as required by law, is not yet displayed in the capitol of the United States.

5 years ago, I was locked in my office after Donald Trump incited a violent insurrection in an attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. Congress passed a law to honor those who protected our democracy on January 6th by displaying a plaque in the Capitol recognizing their service. Speaker Johnson refuses to put the plaque up as he tries to rewrite history about what happened that day. I proudly display this plaque outside my office. Learn more:

Speaker Johnson still refuses to hang a plaque, mandated by law, to honor the officers who defended the Capitol from the violent mob on January 6. Yet Trump’s DOJ is handing millions to the family of a January 6 rioter. Rep. Jamie Raskin: “The Speaker’s stubborn refusal to respect the law here is craven submission to Donald Trump.”

On the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, the official plaque honoring the police who defended democracy that day is nowhere to be found. Republicans are refusing to install it, even though Congress passed a law requiring it. You can bet this decision to break the law is about appeasing Trump and erasing the truth.

Today marks 5 years since the attack on our Capitol on January 6. There have been a lot of efforts to rewrite history, but I was there that day. The building that represents American democracy was attacked by a violent mob, incited by President Trump, with the goal of preventing the certification of the 2020 election. Five U.S. Capitol and DC Metropolitan police officers lost their lives as a result of January 6, by heart attack and by suicide. Today, I stopped by U.S. Capitol Police headquarters to thank them for their service five years ago. As I stood in their operations center, it was surreal and sobering: on the big screens behind them were TV stations replaying footage of the attack five years ago, side by side with a live coverage of a protest today on the National Mall, led by Proud Boys who had been found guilty of violence on January 6th, and pardoned this year by Trump. And on yet other screens, reports of how the White House was trying to claim that January 6th was "a hoax." Despite everything they face, the Capitol Police continue to protect lawmakers and our Capitol, including providing me with 24/7 security for the past month after a raft of new threats over the past few weeks. We owe the Capitol Police a debt of gratitude for what they sacrificed for democracy back in January 6, 2021, and for their loss of life. And we certainly owe it to them, on this anniversary, to tell the true story of what happened for the history books.

Today, I journeyed to an obscure part of the Capitol basement to see the long-awaited plaque honoring the police officers who defended Congress and America against Trump’s insurrectionary mob on January 6, 2021. To his credit, Sen. Tillis joined Democrats in demanding it be put up, but this spot is not accessible to the public. Speaker Johnson, come on—put the plaque in its rightful place of honor.

In the five years since Jan. 6, 2021, there has been a widespread fight over the story of that day. Lisa Desjardins was inside the U.S. Capitol and witnessed the storming firsthand. She has this look at the half-decade battle over the narrative.
