The ruling power finds it more useful to keep the people in poverty, so that those who hand out a few banknotes and bags of rice are seen as saviors. After 43 years of unchallenged rule, this regime has succeeded in depriving the people of their dignity.

Too many people have been fed the rhetoric that if you break the law, you no longer have human rights. This rhetoric is not only categorically false, but also morally wrong & incompatible with Christianity. The vast majority of immigrants in America have not broken the law & have no criminal record, and the ones who have broken the law still retain their human rights. No matter where any of us stand on immigration policy, we cannot accept solutions that deny people their human rights, and it’s our duty to demand that our government do better. I am in disbelief that this Congress still hasn’t found the political will to do something as basic, as decent, as installing a plaque to honor the law enforcement officers who protected the Capitol on January 6. Honoring the people who risked their lives for this institution should not be controversial. It should be automatic. And if we can’t agree to put up a plaque in their honor, what kind of example are we setting for the American people, for our kids, and for the next generation of officers who might one day be asked to stand between democracy and chaos? Put up the plaque. Show the country we still have a conscience. And show those officers and their families that their sacrifice wasn’t political. It was patriotic. It was noble. And it will never be forgotten.

Today, I came to the Metropolitan Detention Center to exercise my constitutional rights as a Member of Congress to check on the safety and conditions of SEIU California President David Huerta, who was arrested by ICE. I pled with the National Guard, which was heavily armed, not to use their weapons against peaceful demonstrators who were simply exercising their rights to freedom of speech and protest. All people deserve to be treated with dignity and due process under the law. Peaceful, nonviolent demonstrations are critical to protecting our constitutional rights!
