The directing, the writing, the performances. The inciting incident doesn't come until minute 30! The inciting incident! It’s also one of my favorite examples of what I call the “Theory Placeholder.” This is a screenwriting device for mysteries where the audience always has just enough information to think they know what’s going on. They’re never confused; they may even think they're half a step ahead of the protagonist. But they’re wrong every time until the end. The joy is that they’re never lied to; they just get more information as they go, with each theory replaced by a new one. It’s a robbery gone wrong. It’s about prostitutes cut up to look like movie stars. It’s about blackmail. It’s about the mob. It’s about corrupt cops. It’s about city council. It's about cops replacing the mob. Throw in the characters, the dialogue, the music, the look… What a great movie. What a great city. I love them both.

Whether you like it or not, given that this is humanity we’re talking about, AI companions in mixed reality are going to be a huge thing. In fact, there are already apps and services—even on niche products like the Apple Vision Pro—that offer a glimpse into where this is heading. I found an app that is both impressive and unsettling. A life-sized, ultra-realistic 3D avatar standing in your living room—even maintaining eye contact—tricks your brain into feeling it’s almost real. The illusion, however, quickly falls apart due to glitches, bugs, and a clunky interface that only allows for text input—no speech assistant which is crazy to me for an AI companion. You can even let “her” follow you, which feels downright creepy—like something out of a horror movie where you can’t escape your fate. On the flip side, she can also dance or demonstrate exercises like burpees or jumping jacks, showing potential for use as a personal trainer. While this technology holds great promise, we must approach it cautiously. We are entering an entirely new era of technology with AI, and combined with XR, the possibilities are literally limitless. One thing is for sure—the future is going to be absolutely wild.

Critics and audiences are at each other’s throats over Citizen Vigilante, and I’m going to tell you what this fight is really about. This isn’t a review like the critics give — I lived on the other side of this fantasy. A masked vigilante hunting down criminals the system let walk, including a mob boss? I know exactly what happens to a guy like that on the street, and it doesn’t end the way it does in the movie. Fair warning: it’s a rough, violent film, and I say so.
