Pen plotters are old, old, old technology. They were around even before chain line printers, and decades before inkjet printers. But they’re still fun to watch.

Looks like pretty old tech. They were called 'plotters', and we used them to output the drawings created in CAD software in the 80s & 90s before large format inkjet printers arrived. To this day some CAD programs refer to printing as 'plotting'. Not seen one in 20 years.

Well aktchully, that's not a blueprint -- that's an original drawing. Blueprints were used to make copies of plans way back, before even plotters were used to make original drawings. Blueprinting was made obsolete by large xerographic photocopiers.

Why is this a "robot" and not just a "plotter" following a cad program. Is it because the arm moving instead of the paper? Or maybe it's the pen.

The number of times I had to reduce cross hatch density in order to prevent the pen tips from soaking and tearing through the paper ... Ink Jet plotters were like sliced bread to mechanical designers. Thanks for the memory 🎶🎵🎶

Yeah, that’s great, but it’ll never be better than an engineer until it tells us that it’s an engineer within five minutes of meeting it

This isn't new, plotters like this been around since the 80s, other versions even earlier.

This is how drawings were plotted prior to affordable ink jet, then large format laser printers. This was peak technology in 1990!

This is a large format plotter. Tech that has been around since the 70’s or longer. Lol.

If the ink runs out, do they have to start over?

I started using similar devices in 1987. They were made by Hawlett Packard and were called plotters! Look this video:

I remember the old Commodore 1520 plotter - four pens/colours, but it only printed on rolls that were a few inches wide. I don't think I've ever seen any plotter in action in person.

This is just a printer. This type is often used with a barrel to make very large technical drawings. Pretty old tech, but very good. Big ones are a bit expensive and slow.
