🇯🇵 Oda Nobunaga is widely credited with using the world's first effective, large-scale continuous volley fire at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575. By employing rotating ranks of 3,000 arquebusiers behind wooden stockades, Nobunaga enabled uninterrupted gunfire, which killed 10,000 Takeda clan cavalry and fundamentally changed Japanese warfare. The Japanese reversed engineered and improved Portuguese arquebusiers and created and mass-produced Tanegashima matchlock muskets. It was more reliable, faster to reload, and was able to fire in the rain. By the late 16th century, the Japanese produced more muskets than any European country. Some estimates say 5 to 1. As the Japanese expelled the Catholics, Spain considered invading Japan from the Phillipines and force convert Japan to Christianity. However, the Spanish realized any invasion force would have been wiped out by samurai armed with more advanced Tanegashima muskets. Also, the Dutch offered to build ships for the Japanese and those ships were going to be reverse engineered to fight a possible Spanish Armada.

My cousin from Japan once told me in their history books, Japan sacrificed themselves to weaken all colonial holdings in Asia. It's because of Japan, the French were weakened enough to lose Vietnam, the Dutch lost Indonesia, Americans recognized colonial hypocrisy and gave the Philippines their freedom in 1946, etc

Japan’s culture thus consists of many, many foreign cultures in a mixture. Sometimes it caused us to lose our essential Japanese culture. I’m not even sure sometimes what Japanese culture is. In the sixteenth century Christianity and the gun were introduced into Japan. The introduction of the gun was a traumatic event and had a much deeper impact than did Christianity. The Japanese people were perplexed, but they are a realistic people and they made their choices pragmatically, giving up the metaphysical. We are empiricists, materialists. All Eastern religions are in accordance with a belief in the oneness of man and nature, whereas Christianity deals with the relationship between one man and another. When movies, or film culture, were introduced into Japan they were already based on modern Western thought. But Japanese culture influenced the kind of films that would be made here, despite the Western origins of the cinema. I must categorize the films of the world into three distinct types. European films are based upon human psychology, American films upon action and the struggles of human beings, and Japanese films upon circumstance."
