The fact that this movie didn’t even get an Oscar nomination because anime was not mainstream back in 2016 is a crime.

I don't recall the exact chapter(s) of the Manga of this Masterpiece. (A Silent Voice) but it was when Shoko is about commit suicide. I noticed as she went do the deed, the manga artist had embedded tragic elements in the background of each panel. Like progressive steps, from when he father abandoned them both in her toddler days when they both found out she was deaf, through her teenage years like the bookshelf full of manga stories as she didn't really have friends as a result of her disability. You don't realize what the subtle backgrounds all mean until the flashback occurs in the manga a few chapters later showing her progression up to the suicide attempt. Including a "what could have been" dream scenario if all those previous event as a toddler and onwards hadn't happened. Ending with her waking up in bed to the stark reality of the nightmare of her life with a broken arm and battered and bruised, post-suicide attempt. There is a reason why this story is a masterpiece in the industry. Especially with the main character being one of those early abusers. When he turns around and realized all the things he did, damn, that was strong feels. Still hate Ueno though, never seen such a pretty character be so utterly repulsive and ugly on the inside. More of an animal in human clothing than a woman. Literally, she embodies the meaning of "turning away in utter disgust".
