I rewatched it before s3 and agree. Feels like a contrast. Again, still had flaws but it wasn't anything too drastic at the time. Like it was bearable. I think maybe the issue was rushing into the dance.

Realize the show is Tik Tok shorts compilation now. No scene lasts for more than 2 minutes. They pad the runtime with panning shots and stills. Can't write dialogue to fill the time.

I still think there are some compelling aspects of the show but man, they have completely jumped the shark with Alicent and Rhaenyra. Essentially none of what they do makes any sense at this point. I’m not even someone who think it needs to be 1:1 with the books, but this is the danger of these ‘toxic butterflies’. GRRM has an ability to weave character construction and motivation with plots that make sense — Condal either doesn’t have the ability or the time to match this. It’s resulting in 2 of the best actors in the show being behind 2 of the least compelling characters.

This is the best scene in the show and the one I always come back to. I wish we still had these versions of Rhaenyra and Alicent who were willing to do anything to protect their families.
