Sicario is probably Denis Villeneuve’s best film. Picking Villeneuve’s best film can feel like a revolving door- sometimes I lean Dune: Part II, sometimes I lean Prisoners. But in the decade since Sicario’s release, I’m not sure any director has captured this level of intensity.

Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival has repeatedly received high praise from Steven Spielberg. I think there are a handful of meaningful similarities between Arrival & Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I personally prefer Arrival, this deserved the Oscar for Best Picture & I think it’s one of the best science fiction films in Cinema history. I still can’t believe we’re getting a new Denis Villeneuve film this year.

Roger Deakins won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for Blade Runner 2049. I’m glad Deakins won for this & I’ll never trust someone who disparages this film. It’s not Denis Villeneuve’s best, but it’s still an incredible film for a number of reasons. Deakins being the biggest.
