Chopper (2000) is an Australian crime drama (with dark comedy elements) written and directed by Andrew Dominik in his feature debut. It is based on the semi-autobiographical books by real-life notorious Australian criminal Mark "Chopper" Read, and stars Eric Bana in a breakout performance as the title character. Key events include: 1. In 1978, while imprisoned at Pentridge Prison, Chopper kills an inmate during a brutal confrontation, which places a bounty on his head. His closest friend and fellow criminal Jimmy Loughnan (Simon Lyndon) later stabs him in a shocking betrayal amid escalating prison tensions and paranoia. 2. Chopper famously cuts off his own ears (or has them cut) to manipulate a transfer to a hospital/mental health wing for better conditions. 3. After release, he reunites with an old girlfriend (Tanya), gets involved with prostitutes and the underworld, and continues his erratic, violent behavior—including jealous outbursts and shootings. The story highlights his extreme contradictions: charming and charismatic one moment, explosively violent the next, with a narcissistic streak and a talent for self-mythologizing
