Police Captain Michael Gray, along with colleagues, arrived at the scene to investigate an alleged domestic violence incident at the home of 38-year-old Scott Mason. The address was a multi-unit building where Mason lived. Upon arrival, Captain Gray knocked on the front door, which was unlocked, but no one answered. Using his authority to check on the condition of the alleged victim, Captain Gray entered the building accompanied by Officer Jasmine Hendry. As they entered, Captain Gray began ascending the stairs, with Officer Hendry following him. Halfway up the stairs, they encountered the alleged victim – a woman who appeared shaken and pointed down a hallway just a few meters from where Gray was standing.
