**Left Behind (2014)** The 2014 film *Left Behind*, directed by Vic Armstrong and starring Nicolas Cage as airline pilot Rayford “Ray” Steele, is a disaster-thriller adaptation of the opening events from the popular Christian end-times novel series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. It dramatizes the biblical concept of the Rapture—the sudden disappearance of true Christian believers, who are taken to heaven—leaving the rest of humanity behind to face chaos, judgment, and the beginning of the Tribulation. The story centers on the Steele family and a commercial flight from New York to London. University student Chloe Steele (Cassi Thomson) flies home to surprise her father on his birthday. At the airport she meets investigative reporter Cameron “Buck” Williams (Chad Michael Murray). She quickly notices cracks in her parents’ marriage: her mother Irene (Lea Thompson) has recently become a devoted, proselytizing Christian, which frustrates Chloe, while Ray appears distant. Chloe sees Ray flirting with flight attendant Hattie Durham (Nicky Whelan) and discovers he has removed his wedding ring. An airport worker later hands Chloe concert tickets Ray ordered for London, confirming the trip was planned in advance and raising suspicions of an affair. Ray boards the flight anyway. Meanwhile, Chloe takes her younger brother Raymie to the mall, brushing off her mother’s faith. While they are there, the Rapture occurs. Raymie vanishes mid-hug, leaving only his clothes. The same happens to countless others throughout the mall. Instant pandemonium erupts: shoppers loot stores, people scream and run, a driverless car crashes through the mall windows, and a small plane without a pilot crashes into the parking lot. News reports show the event is global—children and certain adults simply disappearing, with only clothing and personal items left behind. Chloe later discovers her mother’s jewelry abandoned in a still-running shower at home; Irene, a believer, has also been taken. On Ray’s plane the same phenomenon strikes mid-flight. His co-pilot, a flight attendant, and all the children aboard vanish, leaving empty seats and discarded clothing. The remaining passengers—including a dwarf passenger, various travelers of different backgrounds, and Hattie—descend into panic and confusion. A pilotless jet nearly collides with their aircraft, damaging the fuel line. With airports closed, air traffic control overwhelmed, and fuel running critically low, Ray must keep the plane aloft and attempt an emergency return. Buck, a passenger, is pressed into service as a reluctant co-pilot. Ray and the crew struggle to calm the terrified passengers while trying to understand the incomprehensible event. On the ground, Chloe navigates the collapsing world. She learns from family pastor Bruce Barnes that God has taken His believers and that those left behind must face the end times. In despair she contemplates suicide on a bridge but is interrupted by a call from Buck. Rayford explains that New York airports are closed and fuel is nearly gone. Chloe finds an abandoned truck, clears construction equipment from a bridge to create a makeshift runway, and uses her phone’s compass app to give Ray the coordinates. Ray glides the damaged plane in for a rough but successful landing, saving the remaining passengers. They emerge into a world already in flames and chaos. Buck remarks that it looks like the end of the world; Chloe replies that it is only the beginning. .

The film is essentially a contained disaster movie framed around the Rapture rather than a full adaptation of the novels’ later political and Antichrist plotlines (those appear more fully in the earlier 2000 film starring Kirk Cameron and in the book series). It emphasizes immediate human reactions—family fractures, skepticism versus faith, panic, heroism under pressure, and the sudden collapse of normal infrastructure—when millions vanish in an instant. Product placement (including Starbucks in the mall) and chaotic set pieces of crashing vehicles and planes underscore the abrupt breakdown of society. The movie ends on the note that the true trials for the “left behind” are only starting, setting up the broader Tribulation narrative of the source material. Critics generally panned it for uneven performances, dialogue, and effects, but it remains a notable modern cinematic take on the Rapture premise, driven by Cage’s lead role and the high-stakes airplane survival story interwoven with Chloe’s ground-level search amid global catastrophe. The quick-cut clip you saw captures the disorienting, multi-location chaos of that single Rapture moment: everyday settings (mall, plane cabin, Starbucks area) suddenly interrupted by vanishings, crashes, and distress
